Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $72,500 - $76,100/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $62,300 - $117,500/yr.

Work Location: Orfalea Family Children's Center/West Campus Child Care and/or Student Resource Building

Working Days and Hours: Monday - Friday; hours will be either 7 am-4 pm, 7:30 am-4:30 pm, 8 am-5 pm or 8:30 am-5:30 pm

Department Marketing Statement:

Early Care and Education Services at UCSB provides full day, year-round child care and family support services to student, staff, and faculty families. This inclusive program serves over 200 children, ages 3 months to 5 years daily, at two sites in a play and relationship-based approach to learning. The University Children's Center on the main campus cares for children ages 3 months to 3 years and the Orfalea Family Children's Center on the semi-rural West Campus cares for children ages 3 months to 5 years. ECCES offers tuition assistance to income and need eligible families through funding from the CA Department of Education and has been accredited by NAEYC since 1990.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Center Director and in collaboration with other administrative staff, assumes responsibility for the daily operation of the Center for the Infant/Toddler/Preschool. On an on-going basis meets the daily Center staffing requirements, plans the Center's staff development program, supervises and evaluates the teaching staff, maintains NAEYC accreditation guidelines, and meeting State Department of Social Services licensing standards. Facilitates communication between teachers and parents. Promotes a multicultural/anti-bias community environment that supports the mission of the University and reflects the diverse population served by the Children's Center. In the Director's absence, may assume responsibility for the Center.

Required Qualifications:

  • AA in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or related field. Must qualify for a Site Supervisor or Director level permit through the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience in the Early Childhood Education field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA in Child Development or related field
  • Two years as a lead/master teacher

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must hold a Child Development Site Supervisor (required), Director's Permit (preferred) issued by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing.
  • Must hold and maintain Adult/Pediatric CPR and first aid certificate.
  • Acceptable health screening to include negative TB results (valid within 1 year of date of hire), and proof of required immunizations.
  • Satisfactory completion of a required fingerprint background check (DOJ and FBI)
  • Completion of required CA Mandated Reporting in accordance with Title 22
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check
  • UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment

Misconduct Disclosure Requirement:

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

35% Administration:

  1. Responsible for staffing the Center in accordance with, University policy, State Licensing standards, and NAEYC accreditation guidelines. a. Write and up-date job descriptions b. Hire lead teachers, teachers, and assistant teachers when needed c. Follow hiring practices that promote a diverse workforce d. Initiate and document termination procedures e. Develop a substitute list and update the list quarterly f. Determine staff levels for each classroom and make classroom teacher assignments for teaching staff
  2. Maintain petty cash record
  3. Maintain staff records in accordance with licensing requirements
  4. Maintain accreditation status with NAEYC and meet the SDE Quality Review standards This includes facilitating the self-studies, maintaining written records, and initiating appropriate program changes as needed
  5. Assume responsibility for establishing annual program goals with teaching staff and completing an annual program evaluation
  6. Assume responsibility for Center in Director's absence
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director

15% Children's Programming:

  1. Implement and support a consistent philosophical approach in all classrooms in accordance with Developmentally Appropriate Practices (NAEYC) and the Resources for Infant Caregivers (RIE)
  2. Develop written policies in consultation with teachers, parents, and Center Director
  3. Facilitate communication between teachers and parents
  4. Promote "team" teaching models. Facilitate communication between teachers in each classroom, between "sister" classrooms and within the Center as a whole
  5. Oversee adherence to State Licensing standards and NAEYC accreditation criteria
  6. Purchase and maintain center educational materials and supplies
  7. Maintain Resource Rooms and Children's Library

10% Staff Development Program:

  1. Develop and implement annual staff development budget
  2. Provide on-going staff development and training opportunities for all teachers a. Plan and conduct weekly staff meetings b. Plan and conduct regularly scheduled staff development evening meetings
  3. Promote a sense of physical, emotional, and mental well-being of all staff; encourage a sense of staff unity
  4. Meet with individual teachers regularly to assess and problem-solve classroom and Center-wide issues

25% Supervision and Evaluation:

  1. Supervise Lead Teachers and assist them in the implementation of their program
  2. Support Lead Teachers in their supervision of Teachers and Teacher Assistants
  3. Coordinate placement of fieldwork students and interns, volunteers and persons conducting approved research projects. Meet with fieldwork student and interns as required
  4. Provide professional and educational resources to teachers and assistants
  5. Annually work with teachers to establish and review professional development goals
  6. Create and update evaluation documents in accordance with University policy
  7. Evaluate Lead Teachers annually, establish and support a system for the evaluation of Teachers and Teacher Assistants

10% Parent Relations:

  1. Serve as a liaison between teachers and parents for communication purposes, be available for individual parent conferences and for the resolution of parental concerns
  2. Promote and attend parent education programs, social activities, parent work parties and other Center family events
  3. Contribute articles to the Center newsletter
  4. With Director and staff and parents establish Center policies and proceduresWrite and/or up-date Parent Handbooks

5% Professional Development - Actively participate in personal professional development activities including: attending conferences, supporting the activities of the NAEYC and the RIE Institute, staying involved in the Santa Barbara Early Childhood Community.
