Pay Range

$182,310 - $277,344 Annually

$182,310 - $231,180 Annually for the SEL.3 level

$218,700 - $277,344 Annually for the SEL.4 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. Job Description

We have an opening for Group Leader for the Computational Mechanics Group (CMG). The primary focus of this group is providing support for various code development activities with both engineering and physics applications.Group activities include multi-physics and engineering code development, contact mechanics, differentiable finite element code development, and workflow tools that enable users to leverage these capabilities on a wide variety of supercomputing architectures. These activities facilitate collaborative efforts with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD), and the Department of Homeland Security for national security problems requiring massively parallel, high-performance computing systems at DOE, DoD, and external collaborator sites. The group's efforts include design, implementation, and evaluation of finite element and possibly finite volume methods, development of computational models, and analyses with multi-physics applications involving solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, chemistry, and/or magneto-hydrodynamics. You will work closely with the various simulation code leads to ensure engineering code development and user support needs are being satisfied. You will work closely with other groups within the division and Engineering to support the missions of the Laboratory. This position is in the Engineering Modeling and Simulation Section (EMS), within the Computational Engineering Division (CED).

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and technical, strategic, and administrative direction for a team of code developers and advanced users, including sharing advanced technical analysis and recommendations for the development of innovative methods and technologies.
  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain group members through active engagement in career development, performance and salary management, mentoring, and coaching activities.
  • Collaborate closely with programmatic personnel and external sponsors to identify workforce needs and ensure that current and future technical and staffing needs are addressed.
  • Ensure technical quality of work and promote effective teamwork within the group by planning workloads, remaining aware of complex technical goals, and coordinating with project leaders to track progress on performance goals.
  • Work with group members to develop research and development initiatives for external sponsorship, as well as for internally supported Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD).
  • Attend Section and Division meetings, plan and conduct monthly Group meetings, and conduct institutional training sessions as required to influence technical directions, division strategy, and employee compliance with required training.
  • Interface with other groups within CED to identify and promote collaborative efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

  • Develop creative new Engineering capabilities and novel technologies in computational analysis of solids and structures under extreme loading.
  • Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the areas of finite element methods, and/or finite volume methods in both theory and application, including conducting highly complex and in-depth computational analysis.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Master's degree in engineering or related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in one or more relevant technical areas: finite element methods, computational modeling, and multi-physics analysis in solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, chemistry, and/or magneto-hydrodynamics.
  • Demonstrated advanced level ability to promote and lead technical projects, prioritize and manage multiple efforts simultaneously, and ensure timely and accurate completion of reviews and assessments.
  • Significant experience working in a team environment with multi-disciplinary personnel of all levels.
  • Advanced facilitation, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level

  • Extensive experience in the leadership of technical personnel and projects, and project planning and execution.
  • Extensive experience developing and implementing creative solutions to highly complex problems.
  • Demonstrated expert communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively lead a team, present and explain information, and influence and advise senior management, while positively representing the Program and the Laboratory.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in engineering or related field.
  • Significant experience developing and executing technical initiatives.
  • Significant experience working with sponsors to define and implement programmatic requirements and milestones.
  • Significant experience developing, deploying, and/or utilizing multi-physics simulation codes for massively parallel, high-performance computing architectures utilized by DOE and DoD stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory management and structure, including supervision, budget, policies, and processes.

Security Clearance

This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. Please note that your current active Q or Top Secret clearance with DOE or another agency does not guarantee DOE SCI access approval; if you are denied access, you may be subject to reinvestigation of your existing Q or Top Secret Clearance.
