Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Underwriter!

About the role

As an Underwriter-Group you will develop knowledge of insurance medicine, underwriting principles, and life and disability insurance industry practices through a formal training program. Underwriters are also responsible for reviewing individual Evidence of Insurance applications and classifying mortality risks in a sound, objective, and consistent manner by applying company guidelines and philosophies.

What you'll do in this role




  • Develop a basic understanding of underwriting philosophies, documentation and techniques.
  • Complete an in-depth study of the human body, its systems, and associated medical conditions, as well as becoming familiar with commonly prescribed medications.
  • Establish a baseline understanding of non-medical risks and their effects on risk evaluation.
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply the above learned concepts during case clinics and the processing of formal applications
  • Communicate effectively with applicants and policyholders to explain underwriting decisions and provided current application status.
  • Review Evidence of Insurability applications and may underwrite standard and substandard risks within authorized limits of authority in accordance with department guidelines, including: determining whether to accept or reject the application by evaluation of applicant's medical history, financial background, insurable interest and financial need
  • Confer with Senior and Specialist-level Underwriters on complex cases and situations established by practice.

Compensation

Salary Range: $70,600- $117,600 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who you are



  • Minimum of two years' experience in life insurance or financial services, or equivalent medical industry experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly synthesize and adopt new concepts, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Proactive communicator with effective written and interpersonal skills.
  • Documented ability to sustain a high quality of work in a production-based environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Formal medical and/or pharmacological training, knowledge and/or experience preferred.
  • High School diploma or equivalent experience required
