Job Overview

This position collaborates closely with the Hazardous Materials Manager to support the University of Cincinnati's Hazardous Materials and Waste Program. Responsibilities include managing the collection, classification, packaging, documentation, and disposal of regulated waste in compliance with university policies and procedures. Additionally, this role provides guidance and support to the university community on proper waste management, assists with projects involving hazardous materials, and participates in emergency response efforts.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate the regulatory labeling, packaging, transportation, storage, and off-site removal of hazardous and infectious materials.
  • Oversee the collection, packaging, labeling, and transportation of recyclable materials, including fluorescent bulbs, computer monitors, used oil, and batteries.
  • Maintain all required manifests and documentation in compliance with Ohio EPA and DOT regulations.
  • Develop and manage hazardous materials databases to track manifests, labor, and disposal costs.
  • Assess hazards and site conditions, accompany inspectors during site evaluations, and prepare reports with recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Assist in reviewing term contracts for hazardous and infectious material disposal.
  • Reconcile hazardous materials (infectious, chemical and recycling) invoices.
  • Stay current on environmental regulations and assess their impact on university operations.
  • Provide training and guidance on hazardous materials management, advising the university community on federal, state, and local regulatory compliance.
  • Provide emergency response on a rotating 24-hour on-call basis.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support departmental needs. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

  • A bachelor's degree in natural sciences (chemistry, earth sciences, biology, physical sciences or related field).
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of educational experience.

Required Trainings/Certifications

  • Must have or obtain Department of Transportation (DOT) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) certifications.
  • Must obtain OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification and Asbestos Hazard Evaluation Specialist certification within three (3) months of employment.

Required Experience

Two (2) years of experience in hazardous materials management.

  • Oils: There is air or skin exposure to POLS (Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants) or other cutting fluids.
  • Atmospheric Conditions: Conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
  • Close Quarters: Employees are frequently required to work in crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, sewage and water line pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
