The Heavy Equipment Lead Operator provides leadership and direction to staff. Heavy Equipment Operators are responsible for safely operating various heavy equipment that perform the spreading and compaction of construction and demolition, and/or commercial and residential waste disposed of at the landfill or post collection facilities. Equipment operators are exposed to unpleasant odors and sights, and weather elements.

Responsibilities of Position:



  • Assign work to heavy equipment operators.
  • Provide training and support to the heavy equipment program in the operation and processes of the landfill.
  • Coordinates with landfill operations to schedule tasks to minimize the impact on landfill productivity.
  • Assure compliance with scheduled PM of equipment maintenance and manage workflow.
  • Perform efficient safe operation of bulldozers, graders, excavators, backhoes, front end loaders, wheel loaders, off road dump trucks, and other equipment.
  • Safely move material in a manner which does not endanger personnel or equipment.
  • Conduct pre-trip/post trip inspections on equipment and complete necessary forms.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment, (i.e., lubricating, fueling, and cleaning equipment).
  • Operate various equipment for general site preparation, landscaping, snow removal, and/or related assignments.
  • Continuously monitor the equipment to ensure proper operation and minimal down time.
  • Maintain records and files.
  • Clean waste from equipment body and wheels throughout the day.
  • Safely move waste materials in a manner that does not damage the tanks/containers they are held in or endanger personnel or equipment.
  • Conduct required inspections and complete necessary forms.
  • Ensures the trucks, tools, storage containers, and yard are properly maintained, organized, functional, safe, and clean.
  • Must implement the safety program's goals to ensure a safe work environment by conducting safety observations, toolbox talks, meetings, and audits.
  • Troubleshoot, and diagnose equipment.
  • Dig tracks as necessary.
  • Assist with applying Alternate Daily Cover (ADC) when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:



  • Must exhibit strong teamwork, verbal, and written skills.
  • Must be dependable, a self-starter, and able to identify and perform daily operational requirements with minimal supervision.
  • Good verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers.
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job (prolonged physical exertions, including sitting, standing, reaching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing). Also, ability to withstand "bumpy" ride on equipment.
  • Must be able to complete training on other landfill equipment, as necessary.
  • Must pass a written and operational test to be certified to operate equipment.



Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:



  • Minimum of three years experience operating excavator, backhoe, dozer, and off-road truck or similar experience and ability to operate equipment safely preferred.
  • Must have a highly developed mechanical background knowledge of heavy landfill construction equipment and an advanced understanding of schematics and equipment manuals.
  • Mechanical aptitude preferred.



Physical Requirements in a Regular workday:



  • Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50lbs.
  • Frequently working outside in changing temperature, wet/humid conditions.
  • Frequently working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, other airborne matter.
  • Frequently stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling/climbing and/or balancing.
  • Continuously sitting/standing/walking in office environment.



Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:



  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas.
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste.
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable).
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing.
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language.
