Summary of Job Duties:POSITION SUMMARY:

The Phlebotomist supports all sections of the Clinical Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques as well as proper specimen accessioning, processing and related activities. Use of correct blood collection tubes, ordering correct test from requisitions. Match identifiers to information on requisition and labels. Obtain blood from patient using proper phlebotomy techniques for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donation, or research. Resolve specimen and patient problems as they arise. Follows all UAMS Department of Pathology Policies and Procedures for blood collection. Obtains patient specimens at an acceptable rate. This position also assists with access coordinator responsibilities including opening/closing of clinic and will participate in the training of new employees.

This is a split position with Patient Care Tech. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is a trained member of the unit based team who supports the on-going delivery of care as identified by the multidisciplinary Patient Management Team. The PCT works under the direct supervision of the R.N. and performs tasks and duties which do not require a license, professional judgment or intervention. The PCT must pass the required competencies. The PCT works within the Department of Nursing standards. The PCT adheres to UAMS clinical programs, policies, procedures and standards and guest care guidelines. Prepares treatment rooms for examination. Assists with medical procedures and examinations Conducts patient interviews, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and phlebotomy. Performs EKG's, basic dressing changes. Performs administrative tasks by registering and scheduling patients for appointments, procedures, etc. using the various registration and scheduling systems. May perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma/GED.

  • 2 years experience as phlebotomist required.

  • Superior customer service skills, clear communications skills, and ability to show empathy and respect for patients' privacy and autonomy. Excellent patient interaction skills in person and by phone. Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.

  • Successful completion of patient care technician course is required within 3 months of employment.

Preferred:

  • CPR, CAN, PBT, MLA, or CPT Certification.

  • 2 or more years of experience working in a clinical laboratory and experience as a medical assistant.

  • CPR Certified/Licensed.

Responsibilities:

  • Collects blood specimens from patients of all ages using venipuncture or capillary methods, ensuring minimal discomfort.

  • Ensures all collected specimens are properly labeled with patient identifiers and document collection details in the laboratory information system.

  • Communicates effectively with patients to explain procedures, address concerns, and provide instructions for specimen collection, such as fasting requirements.

  • Performs routine maintenance and quality control checks on phlebotomy equipment, reporting any malfunctions to supervisors.

  • Monitors and maintains inventory levels of phlebotomy supplies, ensuring adequate stock for daily operations.

  • Adheres to infection control protocols, OSHA guidelines, and other regulatory standards to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Assists in training and mentoring new or less experienced phlebotomists, providing guidance on techniques and protocols.

  • Works closely with laboratory technicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth operation of the blood collection and testing processes.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
