POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsiblefor managing the overall activities of the pipe fitting departmentassociated with projects at or supported at the shipyard.Department head is considered is responsible for the successful execution of all pipefitter work packages. The Department Head ensures all activities are carried out in accordance with established specifications, budgets and schedules and directs personnel assigned to the department in all phases of planning and execution of assigned production work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Lives the Vigor Values.
  • Accountable to hire and train skilled craft personnel to support work across site and properly assign personnel to the work in alignment with production goals, certifications, schedule, and plan based on skills and abilities. Working closely with HR to obtain/retain diverse people and leading them to be exceptional members of Vigor and as required administer corrective action.
  • Partners with the Director of Project Management for overall pipefitter performance and P&L.
  • Accountable to establish a safe work site and ensure that all leaders and workers adhere to company policies and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Accountable for adherence of completed work and worker performance to agreed quality systems, requirements of third-party regulations as applicable and to specifications or contracts.
  • Accountable to develop, create and maintain a positive, inclusive work environment for all team members.
  • Accountable to hold themselves to Vigor Values and promote and grow Vigor's values within leadership and workforce.
  • Responsible to review/verify all weekly production progressing produced/created or updated.
  • Responsible to review and evaluate regularly reported KPIs (weekly, monthly or for other key events or milestones.
  • Coordinates with support services personnel to ensure equipment, facility, inventory, material and other required items are available to support work.
  • Manage human and material resources to meet production targets
  • Partners with HR Manager in all corrective action
  • Determine and implement improvements to the production process
  • Assists estimating department and project teams with estimating duties.
  • Manage multiple project labor condition found reporting and JHAs
  • Ensure efficient collaboration between departments including supply chain, QA, safety, and project management.
  • Complies with all Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security Policies and Procedures
  • Fulfills all training and development activities in accordance with designated deadlines.
  • Coordinates the overall efforts of the trades as required, to ensure that the ship repair work package meets budget, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Supports meetings to include but not limited to Schedule Updates, OQE, System Restoration, 20% Reports, Budget, Docking, Undocking, Critical Path, CAR, Lessons Learned, Weekly Production and Safety Meetings.
  • Updates and briefs the Director of Production and Project Management of the work package status and problems, with recommended solutions as required.
  • Anticipates potential schedule slippage and initiate plans for alternative actions. This includes recommendations for increased manpower and/or overtime.
  • Works with QA to monitor TIPs to preclude open line items at contract completion.
  • Ensures daily onboard visits checking status of jobs and shops
  • Attends production meetings regularly and may assign other supervisors to attend meetings for other simultaneously scheduled production meetings.
  • Supports management, understands union contract and willing to work with union workers to support management direction.
  • Maintaining and communicating a positive attitude and outlook to the workers, supervisors, and customers.
  • Responsible for accurate time keeping according to company policy and guidelines.
  • Responsible for ensuring that tools and equipment are ready for use condition to support projects


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
The role manages approximately 100 craft employees in various skills on multiple vessels and shops while assuring the enforcement of company safety policies regardless of reporting structure. They are accountable for employee training and qualification, ensuring daily maintenance of equipment and upkeep, and other general housekeeping . They may manage multiple supervisors responsible for assigned tasks. They will be required to document corrective actions and conduct performance reviews of staff. Develops the quantity and quality of department labor head count required to successfully accomplish all projects.Ensures subordinates demonstrate the highest standards of professional and ethical behavior, putting the company values and commitments at the forefront of decisions and actions. Promotes cross craft and cross supervision.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
The individual will interact with other managers in performance of this role and be required to coordinate scope of work with other company priorities. They may be required to communicate at all levels within the shipyard and will interact with customers on vessels and in meetings.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written for constant interaction with all departments and employee levels as well as customers
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate employees in a production environment
  • Ability tolead consolidation of multiple projects into a single operation.
  • Must be a well-organized, detail-oriented self-starter
  • Ability to read and comprehend work specifications, weld certifications, blueprints, contracts and technical publications
  • Ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines effectively to minimize last minute changes or revisions to expected plans.
  • Ability to handle interruptions while maintaining focus in the production environment
  • Must be able to schedule, direct and organize work within a diverse department and coordinate work with other departments to maintain efficiency
  • Must possess the ability to facilitate group decision-making, team building and conflict resolution
  • Must be able to react and perform in emergency situations
  • Ability to use PC and software applications such as MS Office
  • Must be familiar with budgeting, estimating, planning, scheduling principles and material procurement
  • Knowledge of OSHA and other environmental regulations
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and standards


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of ship repair experience, 5 of which should be supervisory level.
  • Requires subject matter knowledge within and across pipe disciplines including, but not limited to, pipe welding and fitting.
  • Must be competent with plans, drawings, specifications, and other technical data.
  • Responsibilities consist of the successful planning and execution of ship repair packages in accordance with provided specifications, budgets, and company established procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of NAVSEA, MSC, and commercial ship repair standards.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced manufacturing setting with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity. In total50% normal office environment and 50% of time spent in production areas in shipyard. They must be able to walk to and from job sites. The person must be able to climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders; to enter confined areas and tanks; or review work at heights. The incumbent must be able to frequently bend, squat, crawl, twist and may be required to lift up to 50 pounds. They may be required to work more than 10 hours and weekend work. There may be local travel and out-of-town travel (including air travel) up to 5% of the time with notice.
