Motor Vehicle Captain

The State of Vermont is seeking a dedicated law enforcement professional to serve as the Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Captain and Chief of Safety. This supervisory position is responsible for directing, assigning, and reviewing the work of Motor Vehicle Inspector Supervisors and Highway Safety Program Specialists.

The role provides statewide oversight of commercial vehicle enforcement programs, including size and weight compliance, oversize vehicle permitting, safety enforcement, and motor vehicle criminal and regulatory activities. The position ensures effective coordination and performance of these critical programs and supports public safety on Vermont's roadways.

This position reports to the Executive Director of Enforcement & Safety.

In accordance with Title 23, Section 102(d), an applicant must agree to be finger-printed and pass a background investigation to be eligible for this position. The background investigation may include criminal, financial and traffic records checks. Hiring managers will notify applicants who are in the final stage of the interview process of the finger-printing and background check requirement, to which an applicant must agree to be deemed eligible for this position. Applicants will have the right to withdraw their applications before finger-printing and/or a background investigation is conducted.

The Incumbent is a Vermont certified full-time law enforcement officer and is armed and drives a fully equipped police type vehicle. Work is performed primarily in a normal office setting, but frequent state-wide travel can be expected in directing, supervising, and evaluating subordinates and assisting with field investigation activities. Some evening, weekend, and other irregular work schedules may be required. Stress may be present in dealing with upset or irate citizens and related duties associated with a law enforcement officer. Some exposure to physical danger, assault, and adverse weather and terrain conditions may occur. Attendance at meetings, court hearings, and seminars may be required. Pressure due to workload and deadlines is present.

Eight (8) years as a sworn law enforcement officer AND three (3) years as a sworn law enforcement supervisor
OR
Eight (8) years as a sworn law enforcement officer AND one (1) year as a DMV Motor Vehicle Inspector Supervisor.

Must be a full-time certified Vermont law enforcement officer at time of hire.

Bachelor's degree.
Background in automotive diagnostics and repair.

A current valid driver's license is required.

Mental and physical condition appropriate to successfully perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, the essential job functions.

This position is Group "C" retirement with mandatory retirement at age 57.
