We are looking for a Vice President of Human Resources for our corporate office located in Brookwood, Alabama. We expect this person to be a role model for the "Warrior Way" and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and teamwork.

About the Role:

The Vice President of Human Resources will be responsible for providing effective, innovative, and practical human resources programs, which serve the needs of management and employees, and support the financial objectives of the company. This role is responsible for a full range of human resources activities including labor and industrial relations, compensation and benefit programs, HR technology applications, recruitment and retention programs, training and development programs, succession planning, managing and promoting organizational and cultural change, and providing

feedback and coaching to management.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide innovative, practical human resource policies, programs, systems and strategies supporting company and business objectives.
  • Build relationships with all company employees; encourage two-way communication and problem solving. Provide current, ongoing feedback to management regarding issues of concern to employees. Facilitate conflict resolution between company employees and/or management when needed.
  • Maintain proactive communication with senior management, providing accurate data, as well as insightful interpretation of that data, on all human resource matters related to the company's operations.
  • Provide leadership in the administration of all compensation and benefits programs, including healthcare, pension, 401k and all other non-qualified plans.
  • Develop effective recruitment and retention programs, including creative compensation systems, relocation programs, and an employee supportive company environment.
  • Provide leadership pertaining to HR technology applications including HRIS and other efficiency and self-service opportunities.
  • Proactively manage employee relations and provide management with leadership skills through direct coaching.
  • Provide broad oversight for labor relations and contractual issues related to the company's represented hourly workforce.
  • Oversee the research, analysis and information presentation used in review of current contract provisions and proposed changes. Involvement in the labor contract negotiation process will be necessary.
  • Assure adherence to all state & federal employment practices.
  • Assist management in the review, evaluation and smooth integration of new acquisitions from a Human Resource perspective. This will include manpower assessments and organizational design.
  • Act as a senior level resource for supervisors and general supervisors for grievances. Meet with grieving workers, supervisory and managerial personnel, and union representatives, as necessary, to investigate and resolve grievances. Represent the Company at arbitration hearings when necessary.
  • Productively assess and evaluate the competitive market (best practices) for improved infrastructure effectiveness.

Who You Are:

A bachelor's degree in human resources, business management, or related discipline is required. An advanced degree is preferred. 15+ years of related work experience, with increasing responsibility and currently at a senior management level, is necessary. Human resources, business management, and training experience, particularly specialized training and/or equivalent experience in organizational planning, compensation, and preventative labor relations is a must. Experience in natural resources, energy or heavy industries with exposure to union/non-union work environments is required.

  • Possess the ability to make presentations and interact effectively with senior management.
  • Utilize excellent listening skills to assess the training needs of employees and department heads.
  • Possess the ability to build relationships and interface effectively with others at all levels of the organization including, from time to time, the Board of Directors.

Environment and Safety:

  • Improve on safety standards by holding safety meetings, conducting safety interactions, and taking corrective action where required.
  • Ensure adherence to State, Federal and Company workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of Safety performance through effective communication, monitoring, and revision of standard work procedures.
  • Identify and report safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain environmental awareness amongst the workforce by holding meetings and involving the environmental department in related subjects.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
  • Integrate environmental policies, programs, and practices into all activities of the organization.

Physical Requirements - Non-Mining:

  • Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to walk short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, kneel, and/or stoop for office equipment or materials.
  • Must be able to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must be able to do repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have quick reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must be able to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds.
  • Must be able to lift office materials up to 25lbs.
  • Must be able to wear the required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
