Job Summary

The System Director of the Sterile Processing Division (SPD) is responsible for providing system-wide leadership for the coordination, sterilization and high-level disinfection of surgical instruments and equipment for UCSF Health. The System Director provides leadership in the development and execution of innovative key strategies; promotes open, effective, and ongoing communication and the sharing of information among and between employees, physician leadership and medical staff. The System Director will oversee and direct all activities, performance, and outcomes including budgetary/financial of Sterile Processing of all locations on a twenty-four-hour basis. The position provides and monitors adherence to policies and regulatory bodies including Joint Commission, CDC, OSHA and AAMI standards.

The position is responsible for ensuring continual accreditation readiness with sterilization and high level of disinfection. In coordination with Human Resources directs the implementation of integrated human resources strategies to ensure quality results in the identification, recruitment, retention and development of key human resources; encourage continuing education and professional development; provide work-related training; facilitate, encourage, and implement processes for new and existing staff's learning and growth; create an empowering and rewarding work environment; inspire and mobilize people to act and perform within a supportive work culture; effective motivation and influence over employees to ensure partnership on organizational objectives. As directed the position implements external and internal audit recommendations.

This role reports to the VP of Peri-Operative Services. Approximately 160 Sterile Processing and Surgical Inventory professionals report through this leader. Provides strategic planning, direction and leadership for sterile processing operations. Manages designing, planning and directing operations for a medical center or health system. Develops and implements programs to improve quality and service. Ensures operations conform with changes in internal policy and external regulations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $118,300 - $268,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Sterile Processing Departments at UCSF Health provide services for reprocessing instruments for surgical suites in which complex surgery is performed, as well as for clinics, and other procedural areas. Specialty instrumentation includes but is not limited to a wide range of service lines and includes innovative cutting-edge technologies, experimental devices, MIS, and robotics devices.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 7+ years of increasingly responsible management/leadership experience in a large academic, complex and highly-matrixed health care organization
  • Central Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) (HSPA or CBSPD)
  • Extensive knowledge of hospital operations in a multi-hospital setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the multidisciplinary team
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements related to Perioperative Procedural Standards and Sterile Processing
  • Advanced skills in strategic planning, developing and integrating programs, organizing operations, and sterile processing operations
  • Advanced knowledge of fiscal management including budget development, account management and tracking
  • Advanced knowledge of procurement and supply chain management
  • Advanced knowledge and ability to develop and implement process improvement strategies and quality initiatives
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Windows and relevant clinical and financial information systems
  • Demonstrated expertise in human resources management
  • Proven track record in the recruitment, retention and development of talent
  • Advanced ability to motivate and influence others
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships, interact effectively and negotiate professionally with influential entities
  • Ability to inform and educate management and anticipate the learning and development needs of the organization
  • Ability to lead and manage staff with diverse skills and expertise
  • Advanced ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and solid knowledge of UC policies
  • Ability to pursue goals, analyze complex issues, facilitate change in response to a dynamic environment, and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to synthesize data and produce comprehensive reports

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's Degree (Nursing, Business, Health Administration)
  • Previous director level experience
  • Extensive knowledge of collective bargaining process, LER guidelines, and AFSCME contracts
  • Experienced leadership with Clinical Ladder development and the ability to communicate, network, and uphold the process
  • Experience with LEAN methodologies and/or knowledge and support of lean principles
  • Lean (TPS/Six Sigma)

License/Certification


  • Central Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) (HSPA or CBSPD)
