About the Job

This is a temporary, full-time Civil Service (hybrid) 6 month position which may or may not be extended depending on SLS' needs in the future. The preferred start date is May 27, if possible.

Job Summary

  • Performs paraprofessional legal duties under general direction of attorneys in the form of legal research, drafting of legal and business communications, and assisting in file preparation, responsible for e-filing.

Typical Tasks {Note: These examples do not include all possible tasks and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this class.}

  • Performs legal research under the direction of an attorney; gathers information regarding laws, ordinances, regulations and court decisions and similar materials - 25%
  • Interviews various clients and witnesses; researches facts to obtain necessary information - 10%
  • Drafts legal documents and correspondence - 15%
  • Reviews information on filing legal actions - 15%
  • Provides assistance for hearings, trials, depositions and other meetings, at the direction of supervising attorneys - 15%
  • Acts as liaison between clients and other parties to a legal dispute - 10%
  • Assists in negotiation and advocacy with attorneys, businesses and individuals on behalf of student clients - 5%
  • Works with student board - 5%

  • Independence in decision-making; general supervision; progress/outcomes frequently observed/reviewed; work is largely scripted by established procedures and guidelines. Works well with adult student population. .

Complexity in Problem Solving

  • Problems tend to be of limited scope and complexity, generally quickly and easily resolved.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Familiarity with and knowledge of legal research techniques, utilizing standard legal reference materials, including CALR (computer assisted legal research). Knowledge of legal concepts and procedures; knowledge of preparation, protocol and procedures in legal document drafting. Skill in analytical review of legal documentation and evidence. Skill in interviewing individuals of various socio-economic backgrounds in situations where relations may be strained. Skill in contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Skill in organizing work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines. Skill in evaluation of information and making appropriate recommendations.

  • Associate degree plus at least two years of experience or a combination of related education and experience to total 4 years.

University of Minnesota Student Legal Service (SLS) a division of the Office of Student Affairs is seeking a Paralegal/Legal Assistant to work full-time on a temporary basis.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $27.12 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 100% Appointment, Temporary
