This position works directly with our club Men's Rugby team, providing them with access to expertise, safety measures, and training opportunities. This role will support various Varsity programs, helping to improve staff-to-student ratios, enhance safety, and elevate the overall quality of training, support and student-athlete experience. |
Position Purpose |
The Strength and Conditioning Intern plays a critical role in achieving the overall goals of the Strength and Conditioning program for Men's Rugby. The primary responsibilities are to develop, implement, and evaluate the training of Men's Rugby as well as assist in various varsity athletic teams. |
Required Qualifications |
- Bachelor's Degree in exercise science or a related field.
- Flexible, detail-oriented individual with excellent communication skills
- Ability to work a non-standard work week, including evenings, weekends, holidays, summers, and extensive overnight travel
- Highly organized and attentive to detail.
- Enthusiastic and creative motivational ability.
- Demonstrated learning orientation in the area of sports performance training and protocols.
- Proficient in proper movement techniques during speed, agility, plyometric resistance, and corrective and mobility training.
- Proficient computer skills with a major emphasis on Excel spreadsheets.

- Certification through the NSCA (CSCS) or NSCCa (SCCC)

Program Development - 40%
- Works in conjunction with the Strength and Conditioning Coaches of men's and women's teams to provide a world-class athletic experience.
- Works directly with men's rugby to implement all aspects of training including scheduling, supervision, training environment, motivation, and goal setting for individual athletes and team.
- Develops and implements year-round, sport-specific training programs for men's rugby-including resistance, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, agility, and speed programs-to maximize athletic performance and limit injury potential.
- Applies professional expertise to evaluate findings and develop programs to meet sport-specific needs and goals.
- Maintains "cutting edge" approach to strength & conditioning by researching literature, observing programs at other institutions, and establishing valuable professional contacts/relationships.
- Supports, communicates, and collaborates with coaches, athletic trainers, nutritionists, and other specialists to enhance the physical development of student-athletes.
- Monitor and adjust program planning as necessary to optimize athletic performance.
- Work in cooperation with the Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2) staff in the rehabilitation and strengthening of injured student-athletes.
Education, Training and Evaluation
- 40%
- Conducts orientation sessions for varsity athletic teams to explain and demonstrate the modalities of physical training to be used for each exercise program and the associated risk management considerations.
- Teaches and instructs proper movement techniques during speed, agility, plyometric, resistance, corrective, and mobility training.
- Evaluates athletes to determine problem areas (weaknesses, imbalances, flexibility) and design corrective programs.
- Performs testing of athletes before and after program participation. Prepares results and an evaluation for each program.
Communication - 20%
- Reports results to, and consults with, team coaches regarding the developmental progress or lack thereof for individual athletes.
- Provides continuous feedback and recommendations to coaches and student-athletes regarding program improvements and changes.
- Promotes the College's athletic program and assists in the recruitment process by meeting with prospective student-athletes on campus and providing friendly, positive, and energetic recruiting presentations and personal interactions in the weight room.
Facility Scheduling and Management 10%
- Assists strength and Conditioning Coaches with the scheduling, maintenance, supervision, and oversight of the varsity weight room.
- Enforces adherence to weight room policies and procedures for use and risk management of all training facilities. Insures adherence to safety, cleanliness, and security standards and procedures.
