Job Summary

Under the general guidance of the Billing Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for monitoring charge reports and addressing billing and coding issues to minimize reimbursement delays and denials. Responsibilities include submitting additions, changes, and deletions to the department's Charge Description Master (CDM) for Rate Review approval. The incumbent will be responsible for coding, abstracting, and billing medical supplies, implants, and surgical and anesthesia services. They will identify all billable services and assign and validate HCPCS and revenue codes for billing to government agencies, insurance companies, and patients.

The incumbent may serve as a resource and trainer for other abstractors, providing guidance on billing and coding questions, as well as system and procedure changes. Ensuring documentation accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and payer-specific rules, regulations, and requirements related to hospital charges is a critical part of the role. The incumbent will participate in project teams and task forces to review and analyze UCDHS billing and compliance policies and procedures, assessing their impact on the Division's billing practices.

In support of coding quality review, the incumbent will collaborate with the supervisor to address any discrepancies between coding and documentation. Key responsibilities include collecting case information, analyzing documentation, identifying discrepancies, and preparing and entering charges into the online charge entry system. Additionally, the incumbent will utilize reports to monitor adherence to required policies and procedures and perform audits and reconciliation processes for charges entered.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience/training.
  • Three years recent acute care hospital billing experience
  • State and Federal rules and regulations related to billing Insurance Claims.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of UB04 and revenue codes as it pertains to billing.
  • Extensive knowledge in ICD9, ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS coding principles.
  • Knowledge of Hospital payer contracts and reimbursement methodologies including but not limited to per diem, fee schedule, case rate and DRG's.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality, and thoroughness to complete work in timely and accurate manner.
  • Independent critical thinking skills and initiative to recognize, identify and solve problems recognizing potential impact to others, patients, internal and external customers.
  • Skill using computers for email, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
  • Ability to apply policy and procedure when making decisions.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and report problems accurately and timely.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment to recognize situations that need to be escalated and notify supervisor or other management of unusual or unexpected situations.
  • Ability to assist in planning and organizing workflow well; and to meet established turn-around-times, and deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize work to meet established turnaround times and administrative deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to problems and tackle issues in a self-motivated manner in line with the direction of the project team and the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Epic Resolute experience.
  • Experience with Government payers i.e. Medicare.
  • Five years recent acute care hospital billing experience
