Position Purpose |
Responsible for overseeing general operations Novack Cafe in Berry Library and Cafe@Baker in Baker Library, ensuring smooth operation of service, Starbuck's training, customer satisfaction, and enforcement of safety and sanitary procedures and policies. Supervises three full-time union employees and 100-120 student employees to include performance expectations, scheduling, hourly assignments, review and approval of attendance records and the addressing of workforce matters. Conducts ordering and inventory for locations, coordinates product movement between Dartmouth Dining venues and ensures food waste is minimized. |

- Five years of general food service experience including supervisory/management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced food operation and to make decisions under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with customers and supervise employees.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to shift attention to changing details and maintain accuracy and timing of food preparation and work scheduling.
- A solid working knowledge of schedules/scheduling software is preferred.
- Knowledge of sanitation regulations and policies and the ability to obtain a sanitation certification. Knowledge of computer operations and familiarity with remote data terminals.
- Must promote a positive work environment and be committed to achieving excellence in a team setting.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as needed or directed.
- Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Five years of general food service experience in high quality, large volume food retail or production operation with diverse menu.
- Minimum five years of supervisory/management experience.

Key Accountabilities
Description |
Management
- Independently oversees workflow and staff. Participates in the day-to-day shift operations Novack Cafe and Cafe@Baker.
- Independent responsibility for the two venues on a regularly scheduled basis, with revenue exceeding $3.75 million and customer counts in excess of one million.
- Assigns and oversees initial work and reassigns workforce as required to balance changes in customer service needs and timing of food preparation.
- Enforces health and sanitation policies and procedures in compliance with FDA Food Code requirements, ensuring proper handling and preparation of all food items, and compliance to operating practices to meet Starbucks' and internal retail standard, so that quality and standards are maintained.
- Responds to customer comments/complaints about quantity/quality of food, service experience and transaction, etc.; seeks to satisfy customer needs.
- Ensures cleanliness and oversees general appearance of both venues.
- Supports Starbucks national Limited Time Offers (LTOs) as offered to College and creates own internal promotions to stimulate sales and increase average check.
- Develops and implements marketing plans in each unit with a focus on keeping the operations fresh, interesting, and desirable to the campus community. Works with the Director of Culinary on pricing strategy and potential new items to be offered.
- Sets customer service tone for the department to include addressing the needs of a diverse community.
- Acts to preclude or prevent unauthorized/inappropriate use of facilities and to intervene in and resolve workplace disturbances.
- Ensures signage in each unit meets retail operating standards and is of high quality, in good condition and appropriate for each location, and public posting on boards are in compliance with College posting practices.
- Works with managers and Dining leadership to communicate information, operational challenges, equipment needs, and makes changes to cafe/facility operating procedures as needed.
- Notifies Security or Dining leadership when assistance is needed.
- Maintains continuing surveillance over physical facilities to minimize thefts, ensuring all gates and cooler doors are locked, storage areas are secured, lights are out, etc.
- Assists with seasonal catering as needed.
- Works at other satellite areas within Dartmouth Dining Services (DDS) as required.

Human Resources
- Monitors and evaluates work performance to ensure compliance with productivity, quality, and customer service standards.
- Identifies performance issues, conducts/recommends training or initiates appropriate corrective action. Implements disciplinary measures, when necessary, e.g. verbal warnings or corrective instructions, and submits follow-up documentation to Campus Services HR.
- Provides daily supervision to three union employees and 100-120 union student employees.
- Ensures adequate distribution of staff on each shift per location, moving staff as needed to fill in voids and independently determines when additional staff is needed.
- Communicates policies and instructions to employees. Monitors their arrival and departure times to ensure that reported hours match those that were worked.
- Ensures compliance to SEIU and SWCD union bargaining agreements for workforce and College; addresses potential issues quickly and effectively.
- Attends trainings offered by the College, Starbucks and/or professional organizations to stay current with food service and supervisory policies and practices. Disseminates information to work teams.
- Attends ServSafe training and maintains certification as required.

Description |
Menu Coordination
- Under the direction of the Support Services Coordinator, utilizes, supports, and maintains Computrition software and associated data base for locations to for all offerings.
- Updates menu and recipe files, and inventory files, to effectively list nutritional information, ingredients and properly calculate product inventory cost on hand for each venue.
- Maintains and analyzes daily inventory counts, forecasts of usage, and places orders for Dining's Central Production facility and outside specified vendors for the venues.
- Receives and stores deliveries and ensures that necessary supplies are stocked for the shift and that all stock is rotated.
- Generates reports on sales, product movement, product waste, for future use within system.
- Monitors sales and recommends appropriate changes, based on high costs or lack of item popularity. Makes recommendations regarding menu offerings and development; may compute cost and price analysis.
