Hiring Department

Dean's Office, University of Missouri School of Medicine

Job Description

The School of Medicine at the University of Missouri seeks a visionary and accomplished leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Medicine. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice Dean, the Chair will oversee a department renowned for excellence in patient care, education, and research. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a department integral to the School's mission and the broader MU Health Care system.

The Department of Medicine plays a critical role in MU Health Care's regional footprint, offering specialized services through distinguished centers such as the Cosmopolitan International Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. These centers, in partnership with MU Health Care, drive innovation in diabetes care, cancer treatment, translational research, and value-driven approaches to improving health outcomes.

This recruitment comes at a time of transformational growth for our health system. University of Missouri Health Care is nearly a $2 billion academic health enterprise serving 25 counties and nearly 800,000 residents across mid-Missouri. The system includes seven hospitals and more than 50 outpatient clinics, and offers highly specialized services through its Children's Hospital, Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, Level IV Epilepsy Center, and Level I STEMI Center.

We are also investing heavily in NextGen Precision Health, a university-wide initiative that leverages research, data, and clinical partnerships to advance personalized care. The Roy Blunt NextGen Precision Health Building, opened in 2021, provides world-class infrastructure for collaboration across medicine, engineering, veterinary sciences, and more.

About the Department

The Department of Medicine is the largest clinical department within the University of Missouri School of Medicine, encompassing ten core divisions: Cardiology; Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism; Gastroenterology and Hepatology; General Internal Medicine; Hematology and Medical Oncology; Hospital Medicine; Immunology and Rheumatology; Infectious Diseases; Nephrology; and Pulmonary, Critical Care and Environmental Medicine.

With approximately 70 residents, 40 fellows, and 11 ACGME-accredited fellowship programs, the department plays a vital role in education, research, and clinical service across MU Health Care and its regional partners, including Capital Region, the Harry S. Truman VA, and affiliated clinics throughout mid-Missouri. Divisions such as Cardiology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, and Hospital Medicine are experiencing rapid growth, supported by faculty who lead innovative research initiatives-including those based in the Roy Blunt NextGen Precision Health building-and hold leadership roles in public and population health.

What truly sets the department apart is its culture-defined by warmth, mentorship, and a deep sense of purpose. Faculty, learners, and staff alike are empowered to grow and contribute in a supportive environment. The department offers the full spectrum of academic internal medicine, paired with the closeness of a community where every contribution matters
