About the RoleThe Principal Electrical Engineer role involves overseeing the design, development, modification, and evaluation of highly complex electrical components and systems . This senior technical position is suited for professionals with extensive experience and mastery in specialized areas such as power systems, control systems, EWIS, CD&H, or similar fields. Responsibilities include leading advanced projects, collaborating with a diverse team of engineers and technicians, and contributing to the development of innovative solutions. The role also involves mentoring less experienced engineers and technicians, acting as the technical lead for specialized projects, and staying updated with the latest advancements in electrical engineering.

Applicants for this position should have previous space industry experience and an in-depth technical background related to the Radiation Engineering, or Survivability Engineering function. This position includes a unique opportunity to establish the Radiation Engineering technical function internally at Sierra Space. In addition to the relevant technical engineering background, the successful candidate will also need to possess project management and strong people skills in order to be successful.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires Bachelor's degree in a related field (or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree or Masters +10 yrs experience).
  • Typically 12+ years of related experience.
  • Mastery in a particular area (e.g., power systems, control systems, EWIS, CD&H, etc).
  • Expert knowledge of relevant industry standards.
  • Expert knowledge of electrical and avionic systems architectures and their design.
  • Expert in troubleshooting and solving complex problems.
  • Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Ability to take task-ownership and lead teams.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision on projects involving both small and large engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of requirements management, functional requirements parsing, derivation, and allocation.
  • Knowledge of systems integration, technical risk identification and management strategies, and Verification
  • and Validation (V&V) principles.
  • Experience performing trade studies to support subsystem architecture decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience evaluating susceptibility of electronic systems, hardware components and electronic devices to the natural space radiation environment and recommending techniques for mitigation based on design for radiation tolerance techniques.
  • Solid understanding of radiation analyses software tools and their use in defining and modeling the radiation environment.
  • Experience with materials and electronics radiation testing for both cumulative and transient degradation.
  • Experienced with statistical data analyses and error rate estimation methodologies used to support error rate determination and hardware systems reliability.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate environmental definitions and radiation technical requirements at program onset.
  • Familiarity with radiation assessment and mitigation strategies as related to human safety and on-board crew.
  • Experience with electrical subsystems and electrical circuit analyses for the purposes of implementing mitigations for radiation tolerance
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance may be required. Learn more about the background check process for Security Clearances.

Physical/Mental/Emotional Requirements:

  • Frequently walk, sit, stand, climb stairs and steps
  • Frequently repeat same hand, arm, and finger motion many times to include finger and hand dexterity
  • Rarely lifting or carrying up to 20 lbs.

Working Conditions:

  • Rarely exposed to outdoor elements (high/low temperatures, sun, rain/snow, etc.)
  • Rarely exposed to fumes or hazardous chemicals/materials
  • Rarely exposed to loud noises

Adjudicative factors which affect the outcome of the eligibility determination include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the U.S., foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security.
