Job Description:

  • Performs and oversees skilled landscape maintenance and/or landscape construction tasks including but not limited to: landscape design, tree/shrub transplanting, pruning and removals, flower bed design/selection, and agri-chemical applications when not involved in Gorge Trail maintenance. Individual will be expected ensure that daily tasks and responsibilities are completed in a timely fashion.
  • Gorge Trail duties include but not limited to evaluating trail conditions, conducting routine trail maintenance, litter removal, responding to emergency alerts, report any observed imminent tree safety concerns and trail conditions requiring extensive repair or masonry work. When Trail work is complete, performs manual labor for general landscape maintenance and/or landscape construction tasks including but not limited to: turf maintenance, agri-chem treatments, plant/bed maintenance, litter control, snow removal, and other duties as assigned.. Operates a wide variety of landscape maintenance and snow removal equipment. Promptly reports unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment, or facilities. Overall, provides technical support for all Grounds.
  • During winter season, subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow emergencies. Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demands. Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods. May come into contact with sewage and dead animals. Regular exposure to bees and pollen.

This position is covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement. At the end of the probationary period employees will be required to pay union dues per article 1 of the agreement. The starting rate for an S08 is $27.00/hr.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid motor vehicle operator license required
  • Five years experience in grounds or trail maintenance or related field with emphasis in natural resources, conservation or ornamental plant care or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience
  • A minimum of three years experience providing leadership for the activities of landscape maintenance, trail care, hazard tree abatement and/or construction work crews
  • Possess working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the landscape maintenance and construction fields
  • Operate hand and motorized equipment such as commercial mowers, hand/power tools, tractors, and loaders
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license required
  • NYS pesticide applicator's license category 3a required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or equivalent in applied plant sciences (e.g. arboriculture, ornamental horticulture, phytopathology, agronomy, or landscape management) preferable
  • Must be experienced in working in a fast paced commercial landscaping/snow removal environment
