Position Description: This position is only open to current incumbents on the OMEE VII, Ft. Stewart, GA location.
Installs, maintains, inspects, tests, and repairs plumbing and piping systems including domestic hot and cold water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, medical gas and vacuum systems (if certified), specialized water systems (e.g., RO/DI), steam and condensate, and related equipment and fixtures throughout the healthcare campus. Ensures all work is performed in accordance with applicable state/local plumbing codes, NFPA 99, other relevant healthcare regulations, and facility standards to ensure patient and staff safety. Cuts, threads, solders, brazes, and welds various types of piping materials. Identifies and corrects plumbing deficiencies, leaks, or malfunctions. Reads and interprets blueprints and schematics.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
* Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems including potable water distribution, sanitary sewer systems, storm drainage, fixtures (sinks, toilets, showers, faucets), and related equipment (water heaters, pumps, ejectors).
* Install, inspect, test, maintain, and repair medical gas and vacuum piping systems, zone valves, alarms, and outlets/inlets in strict accordance with NFPA 99 and facility protocols.
* Maintain and repair specialized piping systems such as purified water (RO/DI), acid waste, and compressed air.
* Install, inspect, test, and repair backflow prevention assemblies.
* Work with steam and condensate piping systems, including traps, valves, and related components used for heating, humidification, and sterilization equipment.
* Cuts, threads, grooves, solders, brazes, and welds a variety of pipe materials such as copper, steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and various plastics.
* Identify causes for domestic water, medical gas, sanitary/storm sewer, and steam system leaks or malfunctions; implements corrective actions.
* Replace worn or inadequate pipes, valves, supports, fixtures, and traps.
* Tests pipe systems for proper operation and compliance with pressure and flow requirements.
* Plan or modify plumbing and piping systems to accommodate new construction or existing facility alterations, ensuring compliance with codes and infection control measures.
* Estimate costs and materials required for repairs and minor projects.
* Read and interpret blueprints, piping and instrumentation diagrams, isometric drawings, schematic diagrams, and sketches to perform installation, maintenance, and repairs.
* Maintain accurate records of work performed (repairs, PMs, testing, material usage) in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and for regulatory compliance (e.g., backflow tests, medical gas system documentation).
* May assist with water sampling and basic water quality tests as part of the facility's water management program, under direction.
* Maintain and repairs items such as valves, pumps, and other appurtenances related to piping systems.
* Adhere strictly to hospital Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) protocols and safety procedures (LOTO, confined space, hot work permits) during all work.
Coordinate plumbing work and system shutdowns with facilities management, infection prevention, and clinical department leaders to ensure patient safety and minimize operational disruptions
Position Requirements
Knowledge of:
- Current State Plumbing Code, International Plumbing Code (IPC), and relevant local amendments.
- NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities Code), particularly sections related to plumbing and medical gas/vacuum systems (if applicable to role).
- Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing, pipefitting, and (if certified) medical gas systems.
- Welding/brazing and soldering for various piping materials.
- Principles of water distribution, waste/vent systems, steam generation/distribution, and backflow prevention.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the plumbing trade, including LOTO, confined space entry, and working with pressurized systems.
- Basic understanding of water quality parameters and Legionella prevention strategies in building water systems.
Ability to:
- Install, repair and maintain a variety of plumbing and piping, steam, and (if certified) medical gas systems.
- Trace and identify causes of plumbing and piping system leaks or malfunctions and restore to approved operating standards.
- Plan and modify plumbing and piping systems in compliance with applicable codes.
- Read, interpret and work from blueprints, schematic diagrams, plans and specifications.
- Estimate materials and costs of plumbing and piping systems installations and repairs.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Lift and move a variety of objects weighing up to 50-75 pounds, such as bags of cement and pumps.
- Lift and move items such as pumps weighing up to 40 pounds overhead.
- Perform tasks that require strength such as working a large Auger machine, operating pipe threading machines and moving pumps.
- Perform tasks that require manual dexterity, such as repairing valves and making precise pipe connections
- Perform tasks that require balance and flexibility such as crawling interstitial spaces to access plumbing.
- Distinguish sounds to determine leaks in water or gas lines or problems in motors/pumps.
- Proper use of PPE.
- OSHA safety rules, AHA (Activity Hazard Analysis), LOTO (lockout/tagout).
- Safely perform tasks noted in the Responsibilities and Duties section.
- Coordinate and work with other staff members (including other trades and clinical personnel) to achieve project deadlines.
- Read and comprehend operations and maintenance manuals, schematics, blueprints, and shop drawings.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Use of computers for checking email, data entry on Computer Maintenance Management Software (CMMS), accessing digital codes/manuals, and required training.
- Identify and resolve failures related to plumbing and piping systems, prioritizing critical systems.
- Fabricate items, using hand and power tools common to the plumbing trade..
- Accurately determine time and materials required for a job.
Education and Experience:
Required:
- Minimum of 5 years full-time, progressively responsible experience in commercial or industrial plumbing and pipefitting maintenance and installation work.
Completion of a recognized Plumber/Pipefitter apprenticeship program OR an equivalent combination of journey-level experience and formal training.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in a healthcare or similar regulated industrial setting is highly preferred.
Licenses and Certifications: Required
- State of Georgia Journeyman Plumber's License (or Master Plumber's License).
- High school diploma/GED or higher education
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to pass background check and any health screenings required by the healthcare facility.
Preferred:
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification (e.g., ASSE 5110) - must be obtained within 12 months of employment if not currently held
- Knowledge of NFPA, NEC, TJC, OSHA, Local, State and Federal Codes
- ASSE 6040 Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel Certification
- ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer Certification
- Welding certifications
Work Environment
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and a full range of climatic weather conditions.
- Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including adherence to hospital dress codes, infection control attire (gowns, masks, gloves as needed), and task-specific safety gear (e.g., face shields, respirators). May wear uncomfortable protective clothing and devices when working with hazardous chemicals.
- Subjected to potential exposure to hazardous gases, high pressure gases, hot liquids, dirt, dust, sewage and oil/grease.
- Requires physical dexterity, standing, stooping, climbing, kneeling, crawling, and lifting heavy objects to perform duties.
- Must be physically able to work on ladders, scaffolds, platforms, roofs and in cramped equipment rooms and other confined
- Excessive temperatures ranging from 10 F to 120 F may be encountered.
- Possible exposure to hazardous materials, requiring use of respirators and personal protective safety attire and
- May require entering confined spaces such as pipe chases, utility tunnels,, pits, and crawl
- Lifting and carrying varies - dependent on location of equipment up to 30-40ft
- Ability to push up to 50 pounds (maintenance equipment); ability to lift minimum of 50 pounds (supplies and equipment).
