Take on a summer internship opportunity within a world-class health organization at our Department of Computational Medicine at UCLA. The department provides a hub for collaborations across the UCLA campus to enable scientific discovery in biomedical data sciences and then works hand in hand with the UCLA Health System to apply these discoveries to improve patient care. Within UCLA's campus lies a prestigious medical school, a world-class research hospital, and nationally-ranked departments within the engineering school with significant strength in data sciences.

The Bruins in Genomics (B.I.G.) Summer Data Scientist will assist with programming/data functions for engineering laboratory in computational genomics in a ten week, limited summer capacity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply computational theory-into-practice, with in-depth understanding of IT-related diverse research application areas.
  • Utilize computational, computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant science knowledge, along with professional programming concepts, for research projects.
  • Develops and optimizes a variety of computational, data science, and CI research tools and components.
  • Manages data and analyzes outcomes.
  • Performs research on current and future HPC, data, and CI technologies, hardware and software.
  • Works on algorithm development, optimization, programming, computer science research.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned.

Please note that this is a 10-week program and limited appointment.

Salary Range: $32.95 - $67.53 Hourly

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's of Science or equivalent training/experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, designing, development, modification, debugging and deployment & evaluation of HPC (software and/or hardware), data science or computational science research software and technologies.
  • Proven skills and experience in resolving broad computing / data / CI problems using introductory and / or intermediate principles.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate technical information to technical and non- technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff; technical, students, faculty and administrators.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team, while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to select and pass on relevant information to supervisor/investigators.

Strongly Preferred:

  • Familiarity with 2 programming languages.
  • Knowledge of basic and multivariate statistics.
  • Knowledge of data science processes.
  • Ability to conceptualize desired tables and graphs and basic code as needed.
