The Open Learning Initiative (OLI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a leading initiative in the design, development, and delivery of open, data-informed courseware. OLI leverages learning science research and cutting-edge technology to enable continuous improvement in teaching and learning. We collaborate with faculty, learning engineers, and developers to create effective, scalable online and blended learning experiences. We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Instructional Designer to join our collaborative team. The ideal candidate has experience applying learning design principles in online course development, is comfortable working with subject matter experts (SMEs), and has a passion for designing learner-centered, data-informed instructional experiences.

Note: This is a fixed term position with an expected duration through December 2025.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with faculty, learning engineers, and content experts to design and develop engaging online and blended learning experiences.
  • Apply instructional design frameworks (e.g., backward design, Universal Design for Learning, mastery learning) in the development of open and adaptive courseware.
  • Translate complex subject matter into clear, learner-friendly content and interactions.
  • Design assessments and feedback loops aligned to clearly defined learning objectives.
  • Use the OLI platform and authoring tools (e.g., Torus) to structure and publish course materials.
  • Work with OLI Learning Engineers to incorporate learner data and feedback to iterate and improve course content over time.
  • Ensure accessibility, inclusivity, and usability across all instructional materials.
  • Stay informed about trends in online learning, learning science, and instructional technology.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Sciences, or related field.
  • 1-3 years' experience in instructional design for online or blended learning
  • Strong grounding in instructional design principles and learning theory.
  • Experience working with SMEs or faculty on course development.
  • Comfort with digital tools, content management systems, and/or authoring platforms
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check
