Computational Biologist

The Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Virginia is seeking a candidate for the role of Computational Biologist in the Platig lab. This is an outstanding opportunity to gain practical experience implementing advanced bioinformatics and computational genomics tools in a unique collaborative setting and to carry out functional genomics experiments based on computational analyses.

Founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, UVA is renowned for its commitment to advancing human knowledge, educating leaders, and cultivating an informed citizenry. The Department of Genome Sciences addresses fundamental questions in biology, public health, and medicine by developing and applying state-of-the-art genetic, genomic, and computational approaches to complex human diseases. The Platig Lab focuses on developing and applying computational methods to infer regulatory networks and test network predictions.

Job Responsibilities Include:

• Run alternative splicing programs such as rMATs in a high performance computing environment
• Knock down RBPs in cell culture and prepare RNA for RNA-seq
• Analyze RNA-seq for RNA binding protein (RBP) knockdowns
• Integrate protein-protein interaction data with other RBP data modalities
• Write a manuscript based on findings

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience: 1-2yrs

Preferred Qualifications:

• BS related to biology and computation (e.g., Computational Biology, Biology and Data Science).
• Experience analyzing RNA-seq for alternative splicing
• Proficiency in data analysis and computational modeling using R, Python, Bash, etc.
• Strong understanding of biology, physiology, human genetics, and alternative splicing
• Excellent communication skills for both technical and broad audiences
• Strong networking and teamwork skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Most of the work performed is in an office environment.
