Job Overview

The Senior Director, Assortment Strategy leads, communicates, and influences category-level and enterprise-wide assortment initiatives.

In partnership with DMMs, Assortment Directors, and Strategy Principals, the Senior Director ensures assortments across categories reflect fashion and trend leadership, highlight must-win items and big ideas, and offer variety across lifestyles, life stages, and price bands.

The Senior Director develops optimal style counts by category, product type, and trend to support Macy's assortment vision and influences how assortments are deployed across stores and the digital platform.

They act as a catalyst for reducing duplication and consistently report on KPIs that support company-wide objectives, including bottom-line profitability.

What You Will Do



  • Develop and execute a strategic, customer-centric vision that drives both sales and profit objectives.
  • Own the buying framework for a category, factoring in style productivity, door tiers, climate, and lifestyle nuances to optimize inventory productivity.
  • Establish a pre-market assortment roadmap, including style productivity benchmarks by category, store tier, and macys.com.
  • Identify growth and expansion opportunities across brands and categories that create meaningful impact for the omni-channel customer.
  • Define baseline assortments for Tier 5 stores, and elevate AUR and assortment offering to meet flagship store needs.
  • Align breadth and inventory levels by month and category to reflect climate-driven demand.
  • Expand or contract assortments based on omni-channel market demand, ensuring vendor alignment across categories.
  • Build trust with key collaborators across the organization to drive effective partnerships.
  • Demonstrate curiosity and strategic thinking within a broad, evolving retail landscape to re-engage and inspire the customer.
  • Serve as an inspirational leader and advocate for talent development. Lead through ambiguity and change with a proven ability to build diverse, forward-thinking teams.
  • Develop talent with a company-first mindset-balancing colleague growth with business needs.
  • Build and lead engaged, high-performing teams and strong cross-functional partnerships.

Pre-Market Planning: Proven experience in establishing pre-market assortment roadmaps and setting style productivity benchmarks.

Business Growth and Expansion: Ability to identify growth and expansion opportunities for brands/categories, contributing to a differentiated omni consumer experience.

Curiosity and Adaptability: Demonstrate curiosity in understanding broader and more complex business environments, transcending traditional competitive landscapes.

Risk Management: Skill in evaluating and assessing risks associated with assortment decisions, balancing calculated risks with potential rewards.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
