The Opportunity: This recruitment is open until filled. As an IT Systems & Network Administrator - Senior Specialist, you will play a key role in enhancing security & processes through automation, leveraging scripting, PowerShell, and API integrations to reduce manual workloads and improve efficiency. This role is centered on security while driving automation and reliability across multiple platforms and plays a critical role in safeguarding systems and streamlining IT operations. This position offers the exciting opportunity to work with a team of dedicated IT professionals while leading complex technical initiatives, enhancing system performance, and contributing to a secure, resilient technology environment within Washington State's operational and policy framework. Some of what you'll do includes:
- Implement and maintain security best practices across systems and networks, including patching, documentation, access control, and vulnerability mitigation.
- Support and administer Secure Service Edge (SSE) technologies to enhance cloud security, user access, and network protection.
- Manage and maintain all server-based systems, whether on premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid environments with a focus on performance and security.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot Microsoft server operating systems, Active Directory, SQL Server, IIS, SharePoint, and other critical applications.
- Manage server networking services, including DNS, Group Policy, and IP addressing, making sure everything stays connected and runs efficiently.
- Oversee Azure Active Directory, on-premises Active Directory, and virtual environments, ensuring they are optimized for performance and security.
- Develop, lead, and maintain automation projects with scripting, PowerShell and API integrations to streamline workflows and reduce manual tasks.
- Assist with managing, troubleshooting/resolving issues, and installing/configuring, network infrastructure. This includes routing, switching, and networking devices like Fortigate and Azure firewalls, as well as Cisco and Dell switches.
- Serve as the primary administrator for all public and private certificates to ensure secure and uninterrupted operations.
- Monitor system and network performance, diagnose and resolve complex issues, and apply proactive measures such as fine-tuning configurations, updating software, and reallocating resources, to ensure reliability and improve user experience.
- Mentor colleagues by sharing technical expertise, documenting best practices, and contributing to a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
Flexible/Hybrid Schedule information: This is a flexible/hybrid position which will be largely remote after the introduction/training period. During this period, likely 6 to 8 weeks, you should expect to be in the Tumwater office 1 to 2 days to familiarize yourself with the role, the agency, and to establish a professional rapport with our service desk staff. The ability to work remotely is dependent on the nature of the tasks and projects assigned and the presence of a remote work environment that is safe and has an appropriate level of reliable connectivity. You must live within a two-hour commute from the DRS building in Tumwater, WA, and must be willing and able to adjust your telework schedule, whenever necessary, to complete work assignments, attend mandatory meetings, trainings, etc., at the DRS facility.
Please Note: Salary range posted includes the 3% Cost of Living increase effective July 1, 2025.

Qualifications

What we're looking for (required qualifications): Qualifying candidates should satisfy all the following requirements below. Experience for qualifications can be gained through various combinations of professional employment, education, and volunteer/personal experience. Experience can be concurrent.
- Senior-level experience with system and network administration across hybrid environments, including automation, scripting, and infrastructure. This experience is typically gained through at least six (6) years of professional experience;
- Experience managing Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, and DNS. This experience is typically gained through at least three (3) years of professional experience;
- Experience developing and maintaining automation scripts using PowerShell and at least one other language such as Python or JavaScript. Candidate must be able to design and implement robust, maintainable scripts and workflows to automate system administration tasks, integrate with REST APIs, and reduce manual workloads. Experience should include building event-driven automation, scheduled tasks, and dashboard or report generation. This experience is typically gained through at least three (3) years of professional experience;
At least two (2) years of post-secondary education or training in an IT related field may substitute for one (1) of the six (6) years of senior-level experience required. This additional education will also substitute for one (1) of the three (3) years required managing Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, and DNS; as well as one (1) of the three (3) years required developing and maintaining automation scripts using PowerShell and at least one other language such as Python or JavaScript.
- Implementing or supporting cybersecurity practices aligned with CIS controls, NIST, or similar security frameworks. This experience is typically gained through at least two (2) years of professional experience;
- Administering or supporting network infrastructure, including firewalls, routers, switches, and VLANs. This experience is typically gained through at least three (3) years of professional experience. This experience is typically gained through at least two (2) years of professional experience;
- Creating and maintaining technical documentation such as process guides, configuration records, and automation runbooks. This experience is typically gained through at least two (2) years of professional experience;
- Experience supporting Linux systems and 1 year experience with Netskope, F5 WAF, or equivalent security platforms. This experience is typically gained through at least one (1) year of professional experience.
The following skills are not required but will set you apart:
- A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, Information Systems, or related technical/business discipline
- 5+ years of experience designing and deploying large scale automation solutions, including orchestration across cloud/on-prem systems, and API integrations.
- 3+ years of experience building or maintaining technical documentation frameworks, such as internal wikis, SharePoint portals, or centralized runbook repositories.
- 3+ years of experience managing Netskope, F5 WAF, or equivalent advanced web security solutions, including policy creation, threat response, and traffic analysis.
- 3+ years of experience contributing to or leading security compliance initiatives based on, CIS Critical Security Controls, NIST 800-53, or similar frameworks.
- Experience with cloud-native automation tools such as Azure Automation, Azure Logic Apps, Power Automate or Terraform Azure.
