Site Safety Health Officer (SSHO)

The SSHO works on US Army Corps of Engineer projects. The SSHO must plan, schedule, and prepare for work to reduce and eliminate hazards in advance. This role is the "competent person" on site and provides safety direction while ensuring adherence to all safety regulations and programs with the Site Supervisor. The SSHO must build a culture of personal awareness and safety accountability. This position requires a constant presence at the assigned jobsite during all active work hours. Frequent travel to project locations for extended periods of time required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

These duties are those typically performed in this position. Employee may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties.



  • Conduct regular daily and as needed safety meetings.
  • Conduct post-accident investigation and provide documentation.
  • Maintain and adhere to jobsite accident prevention plan.
  • Implement an activity hazard analysis for specific phases of work.
  • Conduct inspections, identify safety problems, and implement corrective measures.
  • Continual evaluation of site working conditions and weather conditions.
  • Conduct site orientation.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with employees and USACE.
  • Work within and promote corporate vision, mission, and values of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND EDUCATION

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.



  • 5 years of experience as a construction safety professional in heavy construction and large utilities.
  • Current OSHA 30-hour certification.
  • Certified in competent person and confined spaces training.
  • Must meet USACE SSHO requirements; Prior experience working with USACE preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Office and Bluebeam.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, organization, communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements for applicable safety policies.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The statements below are intended to describe the physical nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification.



  • Perform strenuous physical labor in an outdoor environment during all seasons.
  • Lifting/carrying objects 50 lbs. or more.
  • Lifting from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead.
  • Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, crouching/squatting, crawling up to 8+ hours per day.
  • Frequent climbing multiple flights of stairs.
  • Climbing and maintaining balance on ladders or stools reaching in all directions.
  • Handling and manipulating objects and materials.
  • Coordinating the movements of eyes, hands and fingers.
  • Seeing with or without correction.
