About the Job

This is a data visualization analyst position within the University of Minnesota Foundation's (UMF) Information Technology (IT) department. The department provides the enterprise-wide alumni, donor, and prospects database (DMS) of over 1.6 million records for the University of Minnesota, including all related applications and systems. The system includes the DMS, fund accounting, and data warehouse applications which are a collection of custom-designed modules and integrated purchased software services. They are used by nearly 1,800 active users on five campuses in a complex and dynamic environment increasingly driven by the need for information and technology.

This position develops and maintains data visualization and analysis (Tableau, etc.) to draw knowledge and insights to address business needs with strategic partners throughout UMF including development, finance, human resources, and marketing/communications, and IT. This includes utilizing data located from within the DMS, UMN mass-email platform, the Foundation data warehouse, PeopleSoft, and other externally sourced data. By using statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, programming, and advanced mathematics, they discover patterns, identify opportunities, pose questions, and present findings in a highly usable way. They provide these services while also protecting our alumni and donor data through secure processes and procedures.

Hybrid Work Model:

The University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) operates under a hybrid work model, with the expectation that all staff be onsite at least 2-3 times per week. Our office is located in McNamara Alumni Center on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus.

Responsibilities:

Data Analysis and Data Visualization (80%)

  • Use various data queries, analysis, and visualization tools (SQL, Tableau, R, Python, etc.) to access multiple high-volume data sources and design insightful and highly usable products that showcase the knowledge and insights gained through analysis.
  • Develops and maintains the creation of rich and interactive data visualizations either ad hoc or fully automated and securely deployed dashboards.
  • Using knowledge of existing and emerging data visualization and analytics, provides strategic consultation to partners across UMF and the University to provide insight and recommendations for opportunities utilizing data and data visualization to support business decisions in areas of advancement (alumni engagement and fundraising) such as finance, human resources, and marketing/communications.
  • Acts as project manager to execute key projects and deliverables.
  • Recommends or builds and maintains scalable, efficient and automated data warehouse tables and views that support data visualizations and analysis.

Support strategic direction of business intelligence and data analysis/reporting at UMF (20%)

  • Participates in a "community of excellence" using data analysis tools that results in highly usable and understandable solutions.
  • Supports the training of IT staff in the development and deployment of data visualizations.
  • Provides input on the direction to the Tableau and Reporting roadmap.
  • Provides data support to UMF IT Reporting and Data Analytics team.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree and two years of work experience in the areas of data analytics, data visualization, or business intelligence; OR a master's degree.
  • Demonstrated experience with Tableau Desktop or other data visualization product utilizing SQL to create curated reporting data sources in a relational database environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and to independently develop solutions, analyze alternative solutions, and make recommendations.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Demonstrated ability to create work plans and manage deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience working well in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of work experience in the areas of data analytics, data visualization, or business intelligence.
  • One or more years of demonstrated experience with Tableau utilizing Oracle SQL in a relational database environment.
  • Tableau Desktop experience with an Oracle database and Tableau Server environment.
  • Previous experience working in a fundraising software environment.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $74,000- 84,000/ year; depending on education/qualifications/experience.

Time Appointment Category: 100% Appointment.
