Position Summary

This is the third level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification. This specific Distribution Design position is responsible for supporting the City of Charlotte (Development Services, CDOT, Stormwater Services, Charlotte Water etc.) Distribution Design portfolio for relocation projects in the Central Zone Asset Design Organization. This position is expected to collaborate positively with Area Operations Support groups including NCDOT Relocation Team, DTUG Engineering, and Zone Engineering as well as other internal stakeholders including the Highway Relocation Program team, Resource Planning and Scheduling, Construction Management, Government and Community Relations, Environmental Health and Safety, Land Services, and Legal as needed. Engineering Technologist III should be able to provide technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

Responsibilities

* Independently prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches.
* Conducts engineering and related studies.
* Incumbents are expected to engage in frequent working group phone calls and face-to-face meetings to coordinate and implement changes.
* Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.
* Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
* Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
* Maintains accurate records and files.
* Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
* Provides storm support as needed.

Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Either 3+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 5+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 9+ years equivalent experience without a degree.

  • Valid driver's license

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build cooperative working relationships across multiple levels of the organization and across departmental boundaries

  • Broad knowledge of distribution systems, standards & equipment, and associated safety policies, practices, and procedures

  • Effective problem solving and analytical skills

  • Knowledge of Environmental and Health & Safety (i.e. Environmental Checklists)

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Able to effectively apply basic principles of project management.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
