About the Department and/or College

Computer Science spans the range from theory to practice to cutting-edge inventions. The need for computing professionals and executives has substantially grown over years. Almost every major challenge facing our world is turning to computing for a solution, from conquering disease to eliminating hunger, from improving education to protecting the environment. Exciting possibilities exist for students with degrees in computer science and software and security engineering. Students work with distinguished faculty in applying their math and science skills, gaining valuable hands-on experience, and working on research projects funded by federal, state, and industrial organizations. By learning advanced problem-solving methods, Texas Tech computer science students are prepared to solve the world's challenges in this dynamic and rapidly expanding field.

Major/Essential Functions

Performs complex Academic Advising, educational, professional, or other advising or training at the individual or group level as appropriate. Responsibilities may include analyzing special and/or complex problems. May coordinate and manage Academic Advising initiatives. May supervise Senior and other Academic Advisors. Performance is based on individual advising effectiveness and overall program results obtained. Work is performed under minimal supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Perform related work as required. Carries out other tasks as needed for the benefit of the department and the University.
  • Schedule courses. Develops class schedules to assure appropriate departmental courses are offered without conflicting with other courses, outside the department that are required for students' orderly progression toward their degree.
  • Maintain files and advise students of their progress toward a degree plan or the completion of a degree plan.
  • Assure all students in major are aware of their progress toward their degree. Assure all students in major know what is necessary to complete their degree requirements.
  • Support student organizations and services. Assist student organizations with policies and procedures, etc.
  • Maintain current files on enrollment and retention data. Assures graduate enrollment and retention data is up-to-date and accurate. Prepares reports on trends as they develop for faculty.
  • Develop new procedures to help assure policies are adhered to. Implement policies and procedures pertaining to major and minor areas of study. Assure students are aware of policies and procedures for major and minor program in MSCS, MSSSE, PhD.
  • Counsel with students concerning course requirements, filing of degree plans, transfers, grade point requirements, course substitutions, probation and/or suspension. Assure that all students in major are aware of academic requirements and problems.
  • Coordinate Graduate Admissions process. Put together new graduate application packets, pulling data from the Graduate Admissions database documents sent to department. Assure that packets are complete, accurate, and ready for the Graduate Admissions committee to review. Process after review and decisions are made.
  • Coordinate student pre-registration. Assures that graduate departmental students go through correct procedures during pre-registration.
  • Recommend changes in procedures to conform with policy changes and revised degree requirement.
  • Actively monitors policies, degree requirements and departmental operating procedures to assure conformance.
  • Develop annual report including recommendations.
  • Observe work and safety rules. Always abide by work and safety rules in day-to-day operations.
  • Perform duties of mass add/drops and instructor verifications for the department. Assists faculty and students with mass add/drops and instructor verifications for the department.
  • Develop, prepare, and maintain materials for graduate student orientation, workshops and seminars for the college and department. Assures that orientation material is up-to-date and available to assist in orientation programs.
  • Work as a team with all departmental staff. This includes cross training on things like travel, POs, answering phones, and anything else needed for the department to function on a day-to-day basis.
  • Coordinate graduate student recruitment program for the department. Works with Chair, university, and college personnel to develop and maintain strong recruitment program.
  • Administer regulations regarding academic program requirements set forth by the department and the Graduate Program Committee. Monitors departmental and curriculum requirements and assures students in major are aware of regulations.
  • Represent department in graduate orientation and graduate advisor meetings on campus. Assures college and department is well representing in University orientation and advisor meetings.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, plus two years relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with Banner, Raiderlink, Cognos Reports, Xtender and Adobe
  • Positive individual willing to collaborate with faculty and staff.
