The purpose of Campus Health (CH) is to provide appropriate, affordable, accessible and high quality primary health care to eligible students, and provide a comprehensive disease-prevention and health promotion program in the NC State University community. The major function of the
SHS is that of providing outpatient care to the 34,000+ NC State students. Some level of medical care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic year beginning in August and ending in May. Hours of service vary during the summer and during holidays and student breaks.

Essential Job Duties |
The Medical Director will lead and oversee the medical services at NC State University's Campus Health Center. The role involves ensuring the delivery of high-quality, student-centered healthcare in a large, dynamic university environment. The Medical Director will provide clinical leadership, supervise health services staff, manage medical protocols, and collaborate with other university departments to support student health and well-being.
The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to student health, strong leadership abilities, and the clinical expertise necessary to meet the varied medical needs of a large campus community. Responsibilities are as follows:
Leadership and Supervision
- Clinical Leadership: Provide medical oversight and leadership to all clinical services, ensuring the highest standard of care, including primary care, nutrition, physical therapy and preventive services.
- Staff Supervision and Development: Supervise a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other healthcare professionals. Oversee recruitment, training, and professional development of staff to promote a collaborative, patient-centered environment.
Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Medical Protocols and Compliance: Develop, implement, and maintain clinical protocols, policies, and procedures that comply with state and federal laws, accreditation standards, and best practices in college health.
- Quality Assurance: Monitor and improve the quality of clinical care through regular review processes, including patient satisfaction surveys, peer review, and outcome-based assessments.
Strategic Planning:
- Work closely with Campus Health and other university leadership to align health services with broader institutional goals, including promoting health and wellness across campus, responding to emerging health trends, and addressing public health concerns.
- Represent Campus Health on campus committees and boards as appropriate, to enhance collaborative health efforts and ensure alignment with broader university wellness goals. This includes, but is not limited to:
JED Campus Advisory Committee: Actively contribute to the university's mental health and suicide prevention efforts by participating in discussions, developing initiatives, and advising on health strategies that support the JED Foundation's framework. CARES Collaborative Team Calls: Collaborate with university departments to address complex student care cases, participating in regular team calls to coordinate resources and support for students experiencing crises or significant mental health challenges.- Eating Disorder Treatment Teams: Work alongside mental health professionals, dietitians, and other specialists to develop and monitor individualized treatment plans for students with eating disorders, ensuring comprehensive and integrated support for affected students.
- Engage with additional university committees and advisory boards as needed, to support campus-wide health initiatives, align Campus Health practices with institutional priorities, and advocate for student health and wellness across various university forums.
Crisis and Public Health Response:
- Serve as the primary health advisor for the university during public health emergencies, coordinating with campus leaders to develop and implement effective response strategies.
- Collaborate closely with the university's communications leadership to ensure timely, clear, and accurate dissemination of health information to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Oversee the development of health advisories, guidelines, and protocols in response to emerging threats, ensuring alignment with local, state, and federal public health standards.
- Regularly engage with university emergency response teams, such as campus safety, facilities, and public relations, to conduct drills, refine emergency protocols, and assess the readiness of health infrastructure.
- Provide expertise in managing infectious disease outbreaks and other health crises, including the organization of on-campus testing, vaccination, and quarantine procedures as needed.
- Establish partnerships with external health agencies, hospitals, and government organizations to strengthen emergency response capabilities and ensure resource support during major public health events.
- Remain on-call to provide immediate leadership during health-related emergencies, maintaining up-to-date response plans and ensuring seamless activation of health protocols during crises.
Patient Care:
- Staff Physician: Provide direct patient care to students, including diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medications, and referring to specialists when necessary.
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including reviewing medical histories, performing physical exams, and evaluating symptoms to diagnose and treat a variety of illnesses and injuries.
- Develop individualized care plans, including prescribing medications, providing counseling on health and wellness, and educating patients on treatment plans and preventive measures.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient interactions, diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up recommendations, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
- Coordinate care as needed by providing referrals to specialists, mental health services, and other university or community health resources, ensuring continuity of care and comprehensive health support.
- Actively participate in patient follow-up to monitor treatment efficacy, adjust care plans as necessary, and provide ongoing support to patients managing chronic or recurring conditions.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, mental health counselors, and other healthcare providers, to ensure holistic and coordinated care for each patient.
Serve as an accessible, trusted resource for students, offering guidance on health-related concerns and helping them navigate available health resources within the university and community.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school.
- Completion of residency in a relevant specialty (e.g., family medicine, internal medicine, or emergency medicine).
- Board certification in a relevant specialty is required.

Other Required Qualifications |
- Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to inspire and manage a varied team.
- Ability to navigate complex healthcare issues, including public health, mental health, and emergency preparedness.
- Knowledge of HIPAA, FERPA, and other legal regulations related to student health.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Demonstrated Experience in Supervising and Developing Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers in the Areas of (1) Best Clinical Practices and (2) Efficient Practice Operations, Workflows and Documentation.
- Demonstrated Experience in Supervising and Consulting with Advanced Practice Providers and Clinical Pharmacy Practitioners for Licensure Purposes.
- Experience in Ensuring Compliance with Accreditation, Licensure and Regulatory Standards.
- Experience with Medicat electronic medical record system.
- Experience in a university/campus health setting.
