The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (
ITRE) is a North Carolina State University institutional research center. Located within the University's visionary Centennial Campus,
ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities.
ITRE collaborates with other University of North Carolina (
UNC) system campuses and partners with transportation professionals around the globe.
ITRE was authorized by the NC General Assembly in 1976 and chartered by the
UNC System Board of Governors in 1978.
ITRE operated fully as an inter-institutional unit of the
UNC System until 1992 when it moved to NC State's campus. From 1992 to 2012,
ITRE continued to operate as a multi-campus institute, reporting to the
UNC System office for strategic direction with administrative support and oversight from NC State. Since 2012,
ITRE has operated as an NC State institute in all respects.
ITRE is a university-based institute committed to leadership in the study of surface and air transportation issues through fostering analytical thinking, integrating technology in education and research, serving as a catalyst for problem solving, and cultivating professionals and students dedicated to excellence in transportation. |
Essential Job Duties |
The Research Technician will contribute to the Highway Systems Group and Local Technical Assistance Program (
LTAP) within
ITRE by handling routine, day-to-day data entry tasks for training, technical service, and research. In addition to routine data entry, the technician will be responsible for more detailed maintenance of data sets and some light oversight of students for data collection efforts where needed.At times, technician may be responsible for documentation of data collection protocols for report writing purposes and/or setting up protocols for others to collect data. During certain times of the year, technician may assist with duties related to conference registration, setup, or even minor video work as needed. |
Other Responsibilities |
- Some travel expected for conferences and/or field data collection (10-15%).
- Project work may involve conducting surveys or basic field data collection for technical service or research activities.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Basic Microsoft applications, ability to learn and retain new software applications.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with a wide array of people, from upper management to student interns.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties.

- A valid North Carolina driver's license will be required by date of employment and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
