Job Summary

UCDH Outpatient pharmacies emphasize patient care in Hospital Discharge, Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Ambulatory Care, Employee Health and Specialty Pharmacy. Our pharmacies are responsible for screening prescriptions for appropriateness and making interventions, preparing medications for dispensing, distribution activities, providing immunizations and providing patient consultations. Staff are responsible for appropriate prescription billing to multiple payers including third party insurances, Medicaid, Medicare D and Medicare B plans. Our pharmacies maintain compliance with multiple accrediting bodies and with State and Federal Laws and Regulations.

This position supervises Pharmacy Technicians in our Pharmacy Department and is an integral member of the healthcare team.

Our Technician Supervisors are responsible for the supervision and support of their assigned direct reports.

This position is responsible for supervision of their direct reports which involves timecard activities, performance management, training, scheduling, conducting meetings with staff and others, and creating, maintaining and having oversight of daily operations and workflows.

In addition, support may include completing pharmacy duties during operational need such as customer service (via telephone, electronic and in-person), prescription data entry, insurance adjudication and troubleshooting, processing prescription payments and more.

Based on operations, there may be other responsibilities such as, but not limited to, providing drug dispensing and distribution activities, compounding prescriptions, maintaining pharmacy robotics, inventory management, pharmacy maintenance, and more.

This position is highly collaborative with direct reports, peers and other leaders and requires participation in meetings within pharmacy and stakeholders external to pharmacy.

This position reports to the Pharmacy Supervisor.

This position fosters excellent intra- and interdepartmental relationships and provides quality and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to all patients. #CA-SB

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Pharmacy Technician in the State of California.
  • At least 4 years of recent Outpatient Pharmacy experience as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Working knowledge in billing current third-party insurances, Medicare Part B and California State Medicaid
  • Working knowledge in submitting authorization requests for medications
  • Must be able to accurately perform pharmacy calculations
  • Working knowledge of current California Pharmacy Law
  • Ability to operate Pharmacy Information System and other computer programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT)
  • Previous Supervisory experience in a pharmacy setting
  • Experience working at a UCDH Outpatient/Specialty Pharmacy
  • Experience working in a Health System Pharmacy or Specialty Pharmacy
  • Epic Willow Ambulatory Outpatient Dispensing system
  • Experience in MS Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
  • Experience with bargaining units and labor relations
  • Experience ensuring compliance of operations to specialty pharmacy accrediting bodies (i.e. URAC, TJC, ACHC, etc.)
  • Current working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, generic/brand names and drug abbreviations
  • Working knowledge of current Medi-Cal Formulary and other third-party billing systems.
  • Ability to recognize situations that exceed technician authority and must be referred to a pharmacist for resolution.
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem and identify the resources available to help solve the problem; ability to independently create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved.
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment exists at all times.
  • Ability to impart knowledge and develop the skills of students participating in training programs, as well as new hires and staff seeking additional opportunities.
  • Working knowledge of and skill to apply practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.
The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
