About the Job

The Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory (MPTL) is a cooperative facility between the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UMN VDL) and the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MBAH) located in Willmar, MN. It serves the regulatory programs for the MBAH by being the official National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) laboratory for the State of Minnesota. MPTL also serves the industry with diagnostic serology, bacteriology and molecular testing capabilities. The primary focus of this position is in lab receiving. The right candidate must be able to work independently under the direction of a section manager. It will require familiarity with NPIP programs and MBAH testing requirements. Experience with the use of complex laboratory equipment such as sterilizers and pipettes is a necessity. This position will require the ability to work with Microsoft Office programs, Perceptive Content, Q-pulse, MVDL LIMS, and other software programs as necessary. Scheduled hours are M-F 8 am - 4:30 pm. This position is considered essential and may on occasion require on-call, weekend and holiday work to respond to a disease event or to provide continued operation testing for clients of MPTL.

Duties and Responsibilities
Sample Processing - 20%
Process specimens for testing including receiving, logging in, preparing and routing for analysis while maintaining sample identity and integrity throughout all processes.

Total Nucleic Acid Extraction- 25 %
Total nucleic acid extraction from client submitted specimens and subsequent PCR set-up for the detection of various animal pathogens: During these procedures, it is necessary to operate and maintain a variety complex clinical diagnostic laboratory instruments and equipment for collection, processing, description, and analysis of specimens.

Analyze and Record Laboratory Data- 20%
Analyze and evaluate testing results. Validate testing results are accurate.Validated test results are reported to the clients using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS.) Track quality controls associated with tests.

Reagent & Supplies - 15%
Prepares solutions, reagents, supplies, and equipment for use in clinical diagnostic laboratory procedures: Rotates stock and supplies and notifies the laboratory supply-ordering manager of shortages.

NPIP/BAH, AAVLD, NAHLN, QA/QC and Safety Requirements-10%
Preform Quality Assurance/Quality Control Procedures and maintains documentation according to existing QA/QC standards. Follow established laboratory safety measures
Successfully participate and pass annual proficiency testing.

Department Back-up/ Cross Training- 10%
Department back-up for bacteriology as needed. Culture and serotype salmonella. Prepare media.

Minimum Qualifications:
BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 4 years. Applies knowledge and skill to a recurring task or activity with emphasis typically on precision and timeliness of execution.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $48,000.00 - 52,000.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
