About the Job

Responsibilities:
50% - Operates and maintains all aspects of the Histology Laboratory: performs multi-step
complex histologic procedures as a diagnostic research tool for the detection of viral, bacterial and abnormal growth disease under the general supervision of senior professionals;
process/embeds all submitted pathologic tissue; micro sections, stains, and coverslips tissue;
prepares various solutions and reagents necessary to perform histologic tests; performs both
automated and manual staining procedures (routine and special stains); selects and assesses all control slides through microscopic examination for accuracy and acceptability of stain results; troubleshoots nonconforming results; follows established protocols and guidelines; performance and accuracy are observed/reviewed by senior laboratory professionals.

10% - Actively participates in research projects from within and outside of the CVM as directed by senior laboratory professionals; participates in national histologic study sets by preparing case study material and national proficiency testing through the National Veterinary Service Laboratory.

10% - Maintains all complex laboratory equipment according to the manufacturers'
recommendations; assists in troubleshooting equipment malfunctions; calibrates equipment in compliance with quality control protocols; documents actions and results in an online quality control software program.

10% - Maintains daily logbook of workload; maintains and archives daily checklists of special
stain procedures.

10% - Performs procedures in compliance with GLP and AAVLD Quality Control Essential
Requirements. Participates in the detection and review of nonconforming work, determination of corrective/preventive actions and contributes as a team member in optimizing opportunities for continuous improvement.

10% - Performs general laboratory maintenance tasks including conducting inventory, handling and disposing of hazardous waste material as prescribed by UHS, performing general laboratory cleaning duties and undertaking all quality control policies/procedures. Along with other duties as needed or seen fit by the supervisor.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS degree of a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four years. May require professional health care certification, registration, or state licensure.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in veterinary laboratory/clinic or working with animal research samples; basic knowledge of anatomy. Histology experience including embedding, cutting and staining.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range:$24.04 - $27.88; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
