ACBL is proud to offer a unique career development opportunity through our Pilot Trainee Program-designed exclusively for current Team Members who are ready to advance into wheelhouse leadership. This structured training program blends hands-on vessel experience, classroom learning, and simulator sessions to prepare candidates for future leadership roles within ACBL's maritime operations.


What you will be doing... Your IMPACT



  • Safely navigate the vessel at all times, adhering to established safety protocols and regulations.
  • Report Certain Dangerous Cargoes (CDC) barges during pick-up, drop-off, and designated mile points to the Inland River Vessel Movement Center.
  • Assist and learn all wheelhouse leadership responsibilities under the direction of the Captain.
  • Verify and ensure the proper posting and currency of all vessel documents and licenses upon joining the vessel.
  • Communicate cargo information and associated hazards to crew members for each barge in tow, in accordance with relevant regulations.
  • Enforce Company policies and vessel-specific guidelines to support the Crew Endurance Management System.
  • Maintain vessel compliance with established standards and regulations.


What we are looking for...

You will need to have:



  • Demonstrated commitment to the organization's IMPACT culture, leadership capabilities, and history of safe work practices.
  • Minimum of 2 (two) written recommendations from different Chief Engineers or Captains.
  • At least 365 days of experience working 12-hour shifts on deck on a towing vessel.
  • A minimum of 182 days of deck experience specifically with our company (ACBL).
  • Possession of an Apprentice Mate/Steersman License or higher.
  • Clean disciplinary record with no active issues for at least 12 months, including attendance concerns.
  • Minimum of 2 acceptable performance evaluations rated as "meets expectations" or above within the last year.
  • Compliance with general advancement requirements outlined in SMS 6 Ch. 4-1.
  • Up-to-date completion of all required training.
  • Willingness to sign the Steering Agreement.
  • Completion of the Predictive Index (PI) assessment.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, TWIC card, and MMC (Merchant Mariner Credential).
