JOB TITLE:

SER Research Professional I - Geophysics

JOB PURPOSE:

Work under the guidance of SER Research Professional II or III, Program Manager, Center Director, Senior Director of Research on applied energy research to drive energy-related economic development for Wyoming.

This Research Professional I position will work under the guidance of senior research professionals and program managers at the Center for Economic Geology Research (CEGR), a Center of Excellence at the University of Wyoming's School of Energy Resources (SER), on applied geologic energy research. This position seeks a specialist in geophysics, with a preference towards candidates that have geophysical research experience in carbon management and/or energy production.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Undertake research based on energy-related subject matter expertise.
  • Conduct energy-related research tasks as requested by supervisor.
  • Present verbally, prepare reports and other materials as needed to communicate the results.
  • Actively participate in team meetings
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required to perform the essential duties of this position.
  • Utilize scientific methods to analyze data pertaining to geophysical analysis and subsurface geologic characterization
  • Help to support and organize data collection, monitor and assess data quality, and ensure input and maintenance of relevant databases
  • Employ relevant geophysical assessment and modeling software to facilitate the highest quality output
  • Assess data, including geophysical dataset and petrophysical well, to develop geophysical interpretations and models for incorporation into subsurface property models and simulations
  • Aid in the preparation of scientific reports and publications
  • Help to oversee data collection, monitor data quality, and maintain and ensure input into relevant databases
  • Provide scientific inputs to field projects and other applied scientific endeavors
  • Support preparation of proposals for applied research in subsurface characterization with objectives of commercialization
  • Engage in a professional manner to have a positive impact on the performance and morale of CEGR staff, relations with stakeholders, and the overall quality of the Center
  • Work closely with CEGR and School of Energy Resources staff, stakeholders, collaborators, and industry stakeholders on applied energy studies

  • Read, understand, and follow safety procedures.
  • Accurately document work.
  • Design, organize, and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research tasks for projects.
  • Use independent judgment to develop advanced technologies and approaches for advancing research.
  • Develop and follow research methodologies and protocols.
  • Draw conclusions and make recommendations based on research data and findings.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Draft technical scientific reports and publications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in relevant field (Physicist, Geochemist, Economist, Data/GIS/Computer Science, Visualization, social sciences related to energy development, etc.)

Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy .

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MS or PhD degree, or equivalent experience in geophysics, petrophysics, or similar field
  • Experience working on applied energy projects
  • Experience working on geophysical analysis and characterization to advance subsurface property modeling
  • Experience working with commercial geophysical software
  • Experience writing scientific publications and/or technical reports
