The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Research Mentee.

About the Opportunity

WVU's NSF funded RaMP program is a yearlong program for recent graduates that come from underrepresented communities, schools with limited resources, and first-generation college students that want to continue their education in research. The mission behind the program is to provide 4 mentees with skills in research that they would not have before the program to allow them to progress in the field of STEM. Mentees should have a passion for helping to solve the societal need for young, educated individuals in the three different One Health themes. The themes are Water Use & Quality, Environmental Contamination, and Biological Correlates of Disease. Together we want to build a community of dedicated researchers to help create solutions to societal struggles we face in the three core sections of one health.

What You'll Do



  • Research activities including lab & field-based analysis as needed, data collection, data management, and data analysis.
  • Oral and written communication of results.
  • Mentees will acquire training in ethical and safe research conduct, effective experimental design and scientific writing.
  • Skills in laboratory work and field and data analysis techniques that are immediately applicable in the current STEM workplace (academic or otherwise).
  • Participate in weekly program, lab meetings, workshops and annual program meeting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 0-12 months of research experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

About Research Corporation

The WVURC was created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1985 to support research (R1) at West Virginia University. We provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University.

The WVURC receives and administers funds awarded by external agencies for research and other activities and is responsible for helping protect intellectual property through patents, copyrights and licensing agreements for start-up companies based on University research.
