Job Summary

The Ahituv Lab at UCSF is seeking a part-time Staff Research Associate I (SRA I) to join a team focused on understanding the role of regulatory sequences in biology and disease. This entry-level position provides essential research support for studies investigating gene regulatory elements and their influence on human diversity and disease. The successful candidate will assist with both laboratory and computational tasks, including mouse colony maintenance, molecular biology experiments, and data management.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Research Support

  • Monitor and breed mouse lines.
  • Genotype mice and carry out molecular biology experiments.
  • Characterize genetic modifications under supervision.

Computational Support

  • Assist with managing large computational datasets.
  • Help establish computational pipelines and workflows.
  • Support data organization for lab projects.

Lab Operations & Maintenance

  • Perform general lab maintenance, including ordering supplies and maintaining equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist with database entry.
  • Prepare basic lab solutions and manage shipping/receiving duties.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Practical knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments efficiently.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with sound research methodologies and data analysis techniques.
  • Ability to quickly learn new laboratory techniques with minimal supervision.
