OUTSIDE MACHINIST 1/CLASS

1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)

Outside Machinists are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safety, with the highest quality, in a professional manner. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.

1. POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)

Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years directly related experience. 

POSITION DEMANDS (Required Experience)

1. Must have at least 5 years' experience working on ships
2. Must have full knowledge of WAF's
3. Must be able to complete work with little guidance from Supervisor.
4. Must have knowledge of Standard Items
5. Must have knowledge of shop equipment
6. Works well with others

1. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. VISUAL REQUIREMENTS

Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades' tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.

1. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Machine Shop Foreman / General Foreman.

1. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ability to identify parts, read tech manuals, spec items and blueprints.
2. Ability to use and understand precision measuring instrument
3. Have experience in machinery overhaul and installation and testing of all the following:

• Winches (Electric driven, Electro Hydraulic)
• Anchor Windless
• Steering Gear
• Air Compressors
• Pump and motor alignments
• Valve Repairs
• Diesel Engine Repairs
• Hydraulic Trouble shooting, repairs
• Reduction gear repairs
• Generator repairs
• Boat davit repairs
• Bearing fit-up & installation
• Gas turbine repairs

1. Have Propulsion experience of the following:

• Shafting repairs and alignment, fixed and controllable pitch
• Propellers removed and installed
• Rudders repair and installed

1. Tool Operation Requirements:

• Operator grinder, fixed and portable
• Operate drill presses, fixed and portable
• Fixed Presses
• Porta powers
• Hydraulic jacks
• Torches and Torque Wrenches

1. ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountable to the Machine Shop Foreman / General Foreman

1. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, and work in tanks and confined spaces. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment. Must be able to work evening and weekend hours. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Must possess or be able to promptly obtain a valid passport. May require up to 30% travel to include international.
