The Position

The Opportunity:

Roche Sequencing & Life Sciences is seeking a Principal Applications Scientist to join its Workflow Applications Team in Wilmington, MA. This highly-experienced individual will play a key role in developing new workflow solutions for both current and future products. The successful candidate will also be responsible for creating scientific content in collaboration with Marketing and supporting Sales in advancing business opportunities.

In addition to supporting existing KAPA DNA and RNA Library Prep chemistries, this position offers the unique opportunity to work with Roche's groundbreaking Sequencing by Expansion (SBX) technology-an ultra-rapid, scalable, and flexible next-generation sequencing platform. SBX represents a significant advancement in genomics by reducing the time from sample to genome from days to hours, enabling deeper insights into complex diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. As a Principal Applications Scientist, you will play a critical role in translating this innovative technology into practical workflows and scientific content that accelerate discovery and adoption across research and clinical settings.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will report to the Workflow Applications Manager and have responsibilities that include the following:

  • Lead application development and marketing projects from conception to completion, including experimental design, execution, data analysis, and content creation.

  • Serve as a technical leader for complex projects, fostering innovation within the Sequencing organization.

  • Liaise with R&D and International Business Teams for project ideation and consultation on new or ongoing projects

  • Initiate and manage collaborations with customers for the development of new applications and relevant scientific content or to support product evaluation

  • Partner with Marketing, Sales, and Scientific Support teams to understand business needs, identify gaps and propose innovative solutions to add commercial value

  • Highlight work through applications notes, technology spotlights, webinars and presentations at strategic scientific conferences

  • Assist customers in evaluating Roche solutions through the design and implementation of proof-of-principle experiments

  • Collaborate with scientific support teams to investigate product complaints or support workflow optimization

  • Limited travel (up to 20% of the time) in and outside of the Boston area to attend meetings with customers, participate in scientific conferences and attend training sessions.

This role involves considerable hands-on laboratory work and requires the selected candidate to be onsite full-time at our Wilmington, MA location. Occasional remote work may be possible based on project needs and team schedules.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field

  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience

Preferred Requirements:

  • PhD in a relevant field, e.g., Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, and 10 years of hands-on experience in NGS technologies

  • A comprehensive understanding of NGS, encompassing library preparation, quality control, failure mode analysis, data analysis, instrumentation and performance metrics

  • Extensive knowledge of various NGS sequencing chemistries including Illumina, PacBio, Element and Oxford NanoPore

  • A proven ability to design and lead complex NGS projects, collaborating with multiple stakeholders and operators from initial concept to final product, e.g., publications, presentations, or collateral.

  • Customer-facing experience is highly desirable along with excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proactive collaborator within and across organizational teams.

  • Strong team player with excellent stakeholder management skills, capable of working effectively with local and global teams.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Ds Massachusetts is $115,200 - 213,900 USD annually. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
