Communications Consultant Sr - Internal and Engagement

Position Description:

The Sr. Communications Consultant leads, plans, develops, supports, and implements impactful, enterprise-wide communication campaigns in support of the institution's mission, culture, processes and strategic initiatives. This role is responsible for content development for digital and traditional communications channels to elevate the MCW brand as a leader in health sciences, research and addressing health disparities. Reporting to the Internal Communications & Engagement Manager, this position independently develops integrated communications strategies, manages internal communication channels and provides communication consultants across the institution guidance, partnership, and support. In consultation with the director or manager, this individual may provide senior leaders with communications advice utilizing change management and project management competencies and must be comfortable working within a complex, multilayered organization. This individual must be an excellent writer and will be responsible for supporting storytelling and content development for internal and external engagement with a variety of audiences. This role works in partnership with members of the MCW Office of Communications and Brand Strategy (OOC), department communication consultants and department leadership. As assigned, this person also serves as a communications liaison to internal and external partners, stakeholders and vendors.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, development and implementation of comprehensive communications strategies, plans, programs, projects and deliverables to support MCW's strategic priorities and initiatives.
  • Contribute as part of the MCW Magazine and content team to elevate MCW's brand as a leader in health sciences, research and addressing health disparities, and inform and influence social media strategy.
  • Develop and implement marketing communications plans to drive engagement with internal and external stakeholders and influencers using a multi-channel approach. Responsibilities include counselling and plan development for key MCW programs and initiatives.
  • Provide expert guidance and counsel to leaders throughout the institution on how to use communications and marketing to achieve successful institutional outcomes, connecting projects to the institution's highest priorities and issues.
  • Manage internal communications platforms and strategies inclusive of our email platform, intranet and other digital communications and templates, outlining and maintaining standards, best practices and processes.
  • Lead or collaborate on the development of communications content, collateral and deliverables for a variety of audiences and channels including: articles for MCW Magazine, articles for storytelling, presentations, talking points, briefing documents, speeches, emails, newsletters, brochures, and reports and others as needed.
  • Provide execution of intentional work that supports employee engagement, culture and change management - ensuring that communications support the institution's mission, processes and strategic initiatives.
  • Select, manage and develop college interns to provide them with a meaningful work experience and opportunities that contribute to their professional goals.
  • Edit and proofread copy for integrated, internal, external and executive communications as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing communications plans and writing for a variety of purposes and audiences
  • Expertise in internal, external and/or executive communications counsel
  • Experience working and navigating in a complex, matrixed environment
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff and administration (internally) and donors, volunteers, alumni, patients, vendors and community leaders
  • Ability to design and/or write in addition to leading a team, with demonstrated ability to lead the creative process from concept to execution
  • Experience developing and tracking the effectiveness of internal digital communications channels
  • Strength in understanding, interpreting and simplifying technical and complex subjects
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate information from a strategic perspective
  • Strong time management, prioritization and organizational skills
  • Efficient self-directed work, ability to remain focused, meet competing deadlines and possess acute attention to detail
  • Demonstrated skills in collaborating, trouble-shooting, problem solving, decision-making, conflict resolution and team-building; comfort with ambiguity and competing priorities
  • Ability to inspire communications excellence throughout the organization
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office programs and advanced proficiency to prepare complex Power Point presentations
  • Demonstrated experience and use of a design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite or Canva

Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.

Minimum education: Bachelor's Degree
Minimum experience: 8-10 years of integrated communication experience; five years of strategic communications planning and counsel

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred education: Master's Degree
Preferred experience: Healthcare experience, demonstrated experience with strategic planning, integrated communications plan development and program management.
