The department of Facilities Management at WVU Tech is currently accepting applications for a Trades Specialist II, Masonry Lead.

About the Opportunity

The Lead Masonry/Concrete/Carpentry - Trade Spec Lead II position directs the work of a crew(s) of maintenance helpers, trades workers, and other assigned personnel while performing both installation of new construction and general maintenance of existing facilities.

What You'll Do

Lead



  • Functions as a team leader, providing guidance to trade specialists and others support personnel as required. Follows procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion, ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspects completed work assignments and helps to ensure quality control. Ensures that proper safety procedures, equipment and personal protective equipment are used while performing job duties.
  • Receive work orders. Interfaces with work control, supervisor and requesting party to finalize project needs and scope. Assist supervisor with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments. Communicates work schedules and goals to employees and customers, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assignments
  • Provides continual inspection of assigned area to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule, recommends to the supervisor major repair need, assists supervisor in updating deferred maintenance list
  • Determines and recommends to the supervisor the needs of the project in regard to crew size, types of crafts, material availability, equipment, paperwork safety checks to maintain proper work and material flow in order to maintain schedule.
  • Provides daily verbal reports on actual progress versus project progress to supervisor. Maintains the original scope of project to ensure project cost control. Informs supervisor of needed discipline and performance problems. Ensures that work requests, materials requisitions, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according to Facilities operation.


Masonry/Tile/Concrete

Masonry



  • Mixing mortar or grout by hand or with machines,
  • Applying mortar to bricks, blocks and stones and placing them in the proper location
  • Using tools such as trowels, levels, and brushes to shape, trim, and finish the materials,
  • Constructing and installing prefabricated masonry units
  • Following safety procedures to operate equipment and handle materials and collaborating with other construction professionals to ensure that the right materials are used and timelines met.
  • Accurately measure and cut tiles according to specifications
  • Assist in the preparation of surfaces for installation, including cleaning, leveling and finishing.
  • Remove old ground and tuckpoint old masonry applications with new grout
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Completion of projects on time and to the highest standards of quality


Tile



  • Prepare surfaces for tile installation, including cleaning, leveling, and applying adhesives
  • Measure and cut tiles to fit specific areas, ensuring precise alignment and a professional finish
  • Install a variety of tile types, including ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone, adhering to design specifications
  • Mix and apply grout and mortar to secure tiles and achieve a durable, visually appealing result
  • Assess and troubleshoot any issues during the installation process to maintain project timelines and quality finished product
  • Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment


Concrete



  • Design and building forms.
  • Mixing concrete and pouring concrete by hand or with machines
  • Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.
  • Using wire mesh to reinforce the concrete where needed.
  • Operate power vibrator.
  • Molding expansion joints and edges.
  • Using stains or colors to add the finishing touch.
  • Treating finished concrete with waterproofing sealants, hardening agents and other substances
  • Polishing dried concrete to enhance its texture and appearance
  • Monitoring the material to ensure it hardens to a durable finish.
  • Removing and properly disposing of excess concrete


Carpentry



  • Fabricates, installs, and/or repairs all types of cabinets, counters, benches, chairs, tables, shelves, and wooden furniture including plastic laminate work; various types of ceiling consisting of suspended ceiling (grid work and tile), 12" x 12" staple or glue up, etc.; various types of floor coverings including hardwood, linoleum, carpet, floor tile, etc.; all window frames, wooden sashes, sills, screens, Venetian blinds, and curtain rods. Builds and installs boards for window fans and air conditioners. Installs window air conditioners.
  • Installs all types of interior and exterior doors (wood or metal) including frames, jambs, door stops, interior and exterior trim and associated hardware such as hinges, locks, closures, panic hardware, etc.; all interior and exterior walls and wall covering including partitions, paneling, siding, wallpaper, plastic wall covering, etc.
  • Installs interior and exterior walls, partitions, paneling, siding, wallpaper, plaster wall coverings, insulation, wood trim (i.e. moldings, casings, baseboards), metal studding; installs and finishes drywall.
  • Installs and repairs all types of roofs including rafters, sheathing, wood or asphalt shingles. Constructs forms for concrete including expansion joints and wire mesh. Constructs ramps, concrete shoot, etc. Works in placement and finishing of concrete. Erects scaffolding, rigging, and ladders for construction of structures above ground level. Fabricates, installs, or repairs all permanent or temporary shelters, wooden steps, handrails, wheel chair ramps, barricades, ladders, shipping crates, pallets, etc.
  • Operates hand tools and power tools related to the carpentry craft. Installs plastic laminates, as they are applied to a variety of surfaces.
  • Interprets blueprints and specifications. Ensures that all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained. Maintains a clean work area.
  • Develops requisitions for parts, supplies, etc. from warehouse and tool crib ensuring timely delivery and sequencing.
  • Install drywall, cement board or FRP. Tape, mud and sand and smooth walls.
  • Will perform general painting duties, such as: painting walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture using enamel/latex paints with brushes, rollers, and low pressure sprayers; patches and prepares surfaces for painting to include finishing drywall or similar tasks requiring basic painting skills.


General



  • Ensures that all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained.
  • Works in areas designated as confined spaces.
  • Maintains an organized work area to include cleanliness, safety, and security of materials.
  • Assist with building maintenance requests; ability to diagnose and repair various equipment as needed. This may include, but is not limited to, electrical repairs, such as replacing switches, lamps, ballasts, outlets, breaker resets. Responsible for troubleshooting circuits up to 277 VAC, single phase.
  • Performs all general maintenance duties related to mechanical equipment systems; this is not limited to, but may include routine maintenance and repairs on condensing and chilled water pumps, air handling units, cooling towers, fan coil units.
  • Must have the ability and knowledge to diagnose and repair pneumatic systems and controls.
  • Coordinates the return of materials to warehouse that are not needed for project completion.
  • Lead must be willing to participate in University offered training classes that pertain to their job classification in order to keep up with changes in technology and codes to ensure that all University building codes are maintained.
  • Will be required to perform Roads and Grounds work; this will include, but is not limited to, shoveling walkways, operating snow removal machinery (blower, broom), maintaining barrier free entries and exits; applying de-icing products.
  • Operates, services and maintain all grounds equipment, such as trucks, tractors, large seeders, riding mowers, snow removal, skid loaders, tilt bed trucks and steep slope mowing equipment.
  • Operates trash compactor truck and drives vans on special occasions (graduation/homecoming).
  • Operates various hand and power tools and equipment in performance of duties such as brooms, mops, rakes, shovels, dollies, hand trucks, vacuums, shampooers, power buffing machines, lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc.
  • Review requests for set-ups. Move tables, chairs, AV or any other items necessary for campus event or program. Clean up afterwards and move furniture back to storage room.
  • Cleans up after projects or tasks to make sure space is clean and ready for use.


Other



  • Assists supervisor in disciplinary action.
  • Must have ability to utilize a computer, respond to emails and complete electronic work orders.
  • This position will require a flexible work schedule and the ability to respond to emergency situations which may require additional hours, and/or call-in.
  • Performs other duties associated with a Campus Service Worker.
  • Create a work order if you detect an issue that needs repaired.
  • Order supplies or identify if equipment is not working.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as directed.


Pay Grade: 15

Work Hours: M - F 7:30am to 4:00pm

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One of the following:

    • Two (2) years of experience in general building trades maintenance experience in the masonry/tile/concrete, or other craft trades
    • Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade
    • Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft trades program


  • One (1) year experience leading and/or trading others
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of masonry/tile/concrete work.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate manual and power tools used in the masonry & carpentry trade

  • Ability to assist higher level trades technicians in facility repair and maintenance.

  • Ability to erect and work from scaffold, ladders, and man lifts.
  • Ability to perform housekeeping duties on the job site and in the shop.
  • Ability to clean and maintain tools.

  • Demonstrated the ability to read and interpret building plans and working drawings to determine equipment and materials and sequence of pipe installations required for the job.
