THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is actively looking to hire a Transportation Technician who will play a crucial role in providing inspection services aimed at ensuring adherence to contract specifications. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will play a crucial role in reviewing the documentation related to completed work units and materials utilized, ensuring that everything aligns with the Department's policies and standards. You will provide guidance and oversight for the District's field construction project records and documentation, while also assisting with various systems such as the Computer Documentation System (CDS v3), ECMS, PennDOT Project Collaboration Center (PPCC), and a mobile construction application on a PennDOT-issued iPad. Your responsibilities will include conducting technical reviews of the calculated costs associated with materials used in highway and bridge construction projects. This involves performing thorough audits to confirm that the documentation and work orders submitted by Project Management staff are complete, accurate, and justifiable for payments. Additionally, you will carry out comprehensive statistical audits to ensure that the final quantities and costs reported by construction personnel are both complete and precise. You will also assist in inspecting construction activities on roads and bridges as assigned, verifying that the work adheres to the established plans, specifications, and special provisions outlined in the contract. Daily written narrative reports detailing the inspected work operations will be generated using the Project Site Activity feature within the ECMS project database, along with other necessary project status and quality control reports. Furthermore, you will help manage work zone traffic control signs and devices, ensuring their placement and maintenance comply with the Work Zone Traffic Control Plan and relevant publications such as Publication 212, 213, or the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Additional related duties may be assigned as needed.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Vendor-controlled work hours; schedule may be subject to change seasonally and/or due to operational needs
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on ad-hoc basis at supervisors discretion. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
