Job Overview & Responsibilities

At United Launch Alliance, an Aerospace Technician (CNC Machinist) performs work in all phases of launch operations, including but not limited to the following:



  • Perform receipt, transportation, storage, installation, checkout, maintenance, repair, refurbishment, calibration, fabrication, welding, machining, modification, alteration, troubleshooting, final servicing and testing of structural, mechanical and fluid systems; space vehicles and flight hardware; airborne and ground ordnance; airborne and ground electrical, electronic, instrumentation and range safety equipment, test instruments and gauges; launch support facility systems and aerospace ground support equipment.
  • Perform test and operational procedures.
  • Perform quality inspection, receiving and specialized calibration tasks as assigned.
  • Perform the planning, layout, setup and operation of all types of precision machines.
  • Set up and manufacture parts on a range of 3 Axis CNC mills and/or lathes.
  • Program complex parts for CNC multi-axis mills and/or lathes (Use of GibbsCam software A+)
  • Will travel (approx. 25%) and work overtime, extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Job duties require traveling between locations on the military base throughout the course of the day.



Required Education

High School/GED

Required Years of Experience

Minimum of 4 years of related work experience

Basic Qualifications



  • Experience with CNC machining
  • Experience performing prescribed preventive maintenance on machines as required per PM schedules
  • Experience troubleshooting machining issues with various types of Manual and CNC lathes and mills
  • Ability to mentor and train less experienced machinists
  • Possess basic shop math skills and have the ability to use a variety of hand tools, machine tools and precision measuring instruments
  • Flexible, ability to work in a fast pace constantly changing environment with tight deadlines
  • Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and personal transportation to drive between work locations on a military base where public transportation is not available. Job duties require traveling between locations on the military base throughout the course of the day
  • Ability to travel (25%), work overtime, extended hours and weekends as needed
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance. US Citizenship is required.



Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience developing machine set-ups, program edits, and working with tolerances to +/- .0005"
  • Experience with high-speed machining and tool path optimization
  • Experience with inspecting own parts using micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and various other inspection equipment
  • Must possess trouble-shooting skills and ability to think critically
  • Must be able to work independently, but also have the ability to work productively within a team environment
  • Ability to read CAD models, solid modeling and 2-D prints and update paperwork neatly, accurately, and in an organized manner
  • Proficient at blueprint reading and understanding of geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Ability to select proper tooling to manufacture complex details
  • Experience with Machine A-286 Stainless, Inconel 7-18 and other more standard metals
  • Familiar with operating HAAS CNC mills and lathes
