Who we are and what we do:

The Tennessee Department of Correction operates and oversees 14 adult prisons across the state, housing some 21,000 offenders. In the community, TDOC supervises 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community corrections. The department operates 44 probation/parole offices in 13 districts across the state.

How you make a difference in this role:

Provides information, data, legal advice, and support for the general counsel and other program areas. Supervisory attorney overseeing lower-level attorneys and support staff. Assist in providing legal advice and recommendations on the most complex legal issues. Directs and coordinates legal programs or major division of state agency. Provides hands on counsel to all levels of executive staff and assists in protecting an agency's legal interest and maintaining its operations within the scope established by law. This class differs from that of the Associate Counsel, who performs work of lesser scope and complexity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advises on legal, regulatory, procedural, and/or personnel matters for an assigned department, and assists in the planning and research of special projects.
  • Reviews, researches, interprets, and prepares both written and oral opinions on a wide variety of legal issues.
  • Drafts, reviews, and approves policies and procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other legal documents.
  • Acts as a liaison for an assigned office or person, and/or may supervise legal work of assigned Staff.
  • Prepares materials for presentations, speeches, and informational forums.

Minimum Qualifications:

Active License to practice law in Tennessee is required. Preferred Experience: 5+ years of relevant legal experience.
