Background Information:
Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT), a rapid capability system integrator and provider of cutting-edge cloud-based integration, automated testing and data analysis for complex, mission-critical systems in the US Department of Defense (DOD), is seeking a Director of External Communications to be based in our Arlington, VA office to lead strategic communications efforts and define IDT's external brand voice.Leveraging advanced software automation, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), and AI-driven capabilities, IDT accelerates capability development, enhances operational readiness, and reduces lifecycle costs for the Department of Defense. Overview:
This role will shape and execute an integrated external communications strategy that enhances IDT's visibility, credibility, and competitive positioning in the defense market. The Director will drive high-impact content creation, executive visibility, thought leadership, and public relations campaigns that speak to a wide range of stakeholders-including DoD policymakers, acquisition officials, industry partners, and future employees.
The role supports IDT's business development priorities and long-term growth by aligning strategic messaging with campaign efforts, capability development, and recruiting goals.
This position reports to the Vice President of Business Development and works closely with the Business Development team, executive leadership, and technical subject matter experts.

Responsibilities Include:
Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and implement a comprehensive external communications and brand strategy aligned with company growth objectives.
- Advise senior executives on communication opportunities, risks, and brand positioning.
- Lead coordination with external PR/media agencies and branding vendors.
- Support business development efforts and customer engagement campaigns through targeted messaging.
Content Development & Brand Management
- Oversee creation of high-quality marketing content, including videos, presentations, and executive speeches.
- With input from subject matter experts, create impactful marketing materials, white papers, capability briefs, and executive communications that support business development and competitive pursuits.
- Maintain consistent brand voice, tone, and messaging across all platforms.
- Translate complex technical solutions into compelling narratives that resonate with government stakeholders.
- Drive thought leadership initiatives through blogs, speaking abstracts, and strategic media placements.
Digital Communications & Analytics
- Manage digital presence, including website content, social media platforms, and multimedia outreach.
- Monitor engagement metrics and adjust strategies to increase audience reach and impact.
- Coordinate visual storytelling and brand collateral with graphic design partners.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field or equivalent full time professional experience (Master's preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in external communications or brand strategy, preferably in defense, aerospace, or government technology sectors.
Required skills:
- Demonstrated success in developing integrated communications strategies and delivering content across multiple formats.
- Proven ability to develop and deliver high-quality written, verbal, and visual content.
- Strong understanding of the government contracting landscape and federal customer environment.
- Ability to lead cross-functional communications efforts and manage vendor teams.
- Experience using digital platforms and tools to amplify content reach and engagement.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred skills:
- Experience with AI-driven content creation or marketing automation tools.
- TS/SCI clearance or the ability to obtain one.
