POSITION SUMMARY:

The Clinical Supervisor for the Clinical Stabilization Services (CSS) program provides clinical leadership and oversight to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care for individuals with substance use disorders. This role is responsible for guiding the clinical direction of the CSS program, overseeing care components, and providing education to staff. The Clinical Supervisor manages clinical and care coordination staff, including interns and trainees, to support program stability and development. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Clinical Supervisor provides direct patient care, ensures admissions meet ASAM Level 3.5 criteria, and collaborates with the Intake Coordinator to review and log incoming referrals. This role also conducts weekly chart reviews, participates in treatment planning, and supports aftercare services, while helping staff develop skills to effectively treat co-occurring disorders and trauma. The Clinical Supervisor ensures that all documentation is completed in a timely manner and in compliance with the regulations and standards set by the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS), the Department of Public Health (DPH), and other relevant local, state, and federal agencies. Additionally, this position plays a key role in ongoing program development and quality improvement initiatives. The Clinical Supervisor reports directly to the Program Director for CSS.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Clinical Leadership & Supervision


  • Provide direct clinical oversight for all master's level unlicensed and licensed clinical staff, substance use disorder bachelor's level counseling staff, and care coordinators within the CSS unit.

  • Oversee and/or directly supervise patient admissions, case assignments, discharges, and referrals to treatment.

  • Provide ongoing supervision, support, and training to direct reports, ensuring adherence to best practices in substance use treatment.

  • Lead weekly group and individual staff supervision meetings and attend professional development sessions and trainings.

  • Monitor clinical staff performance, provide constructive feedback, and participate in performance evaluations.

  • Provide on-call clinical support as needed.


Clinical Program Development & Compliance


  • Develop and implement evidence-based clinical treatment programming, ensuring compliance with BSAS standards and contractual requirements.

  • Oversee quality assurance efforts, conducting routine reviews of patient records to ensure proper assessment, treatment planning, and service delivery.

  • Perform weekly chart audits to ensure appropriate utilization management, ASAM documentation standards, and timely completion.

  • Review and approve assessments and treatment plans.

  • Ensure compliance with all BSAS regulations, licensing requirements, and accreditation standards.

  • Participate in program development initiatives, quality improvement projects, and policy revisions.


Patient Care & Coordination


  • Lead psychoeducational, therapy, and recovery-oriented client groups and provide individual counseling sessions as needed.

  • Collaborate with medical and nursing staff, including behavioral health providers, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, hospitalists, and primary care physicians, to ensure high-quality behavioral health and substance use services.

  • Participate in daily service utilization meetings and take a lead role in multidisciplinary team meetings.

  • Provide guidance in discharge planning to counselors and care coordinators.

  • Review documentation requesting admissions to ensure proper justification for continued services based on medical necessity.


Education & Training


  • Lead educational in-services monthly and as needed for all staff to ensure compliance with BSAS CSS core competencies (e.g., HIV education, smoking cessation, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, etc.).

  • Maintain professional development by staying informed on emerging trends and best practices in addiction treatment.


Administrative & Operational Support


  • Assist the Program Director in scheduling clinical and non-clinical staff to ensure proper coverage in accordance with BSAS and other regulatory standards.

  • Facilitate case conferences, clinical team meetings, and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance client outcomes.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Master's Degree in relevant healthcare field (e.g., Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Social Work) required;

  • Requires at least two years of supervised substance use disorder counseling experience; at least one-year, full-time equivalent, of clinical supervisory experience; and has acted in a clinical supervisory capacity for at least two years.


PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter "N/A"):

  • Doctorate preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED (If none, please enter "N/A"):


  • Independent, unrestricted license in the behavioral health and/or substance use field in the state of Massachusetts (LICSW, LMHC, LADC-1, or Licensed Psychologist)

  • CPR certification or ability to complete training and obtain certification required


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Substance Use & Behavioral Health Treatment

  • Extensive knowledge of addiction treatment modalities, including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Medication-Assisted Treatment.

  • Understanding of trauma-informed care and co-occurring disorder treatment approaches.

  • Naloxone/Narcan training or ability to complete training required
