Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly organized, experienced Controller to oversee the financial and accounting operations of our union masonry construction business based in Massachusetts. This key leadership role requires a strong background in construction accounting, union payroll administration, job costing, and financial compliance. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and capable of supporting both day-to-day functions and long-term financial strategy in a small-business environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Management:
- Manage all accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
- Manage month-end, quarterly and year-end close processes and pay and file all payroll taxes per schedule.
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and budgets.
- Develop job costing reports and manage Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules to ensure accurate tracking of project profitability.
- Manage cash flow, budgeting, and forecasting to support ongoing business operations.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
Union & Payroll Administration:
- Ability to process union-certified payroll, ensuring full compliance with collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), prevailing wage laws, and certified payroll reporting requirements (e.g., Massachusetts DCAMM projects, Davis-Bacon Act).
- Submit timely union benefit reports (health, pension, apprenticeship) and handle communications with union administrators.
- Ensure accurate employee time tracking and labor allocations by job and cost code.
Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure full compliance with Massachusetts tax laws, labor regulations, and federal reporting requirements.
- Coordinate with external CPA for tax planning and year-end audits.
- Maintain insurance, bonding, and licensing documentation, and assist with renewals, audits and prequalification packages.
- Implement and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Maintain and process DCAMM Certification, renewals and evaluations.
Process & Systems Improvement:
- Evaluate and optimize accounting workflows and financial processes.
- Assist with the selection, implementation, and management of accounting and project management software (e.g., Quick Books, Sage 100 Contractor, Foundation, Computer Ease).
- Train and support internal staff on financial systems and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of construction/job-costing accounting experience
- Strong understanding of union payroll processing and reporting in a multi-project environment.
- Proficiency with accounting and construction software (e.g., Quick Books, Sage, Foundation, or similar including Computer Ease).
- Deep understanding of Massachusetts tax laws, union reporting, certified payroll, and prevailing wage requirements.
- Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with both field and office personnel.
