Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Subject Matter Expert to support science and instrument operations in support of the Wallops Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) and Precipitation Research Facility (PRF) at NASA Wallops Flight Facility (WFF). This selected candidate will be responsible for the development, fabrication and maintenance of in-house and third-party electronic components, including NPOL, D3R and TOGA radars. Responsibilities include programming and networking of instruments to allow for near-real-time data delivery to NASA Servers.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • General maintenance and operation of precipitation-related instrumentation supporting GPM ground validation (GV) programs.
  • For the WFF PRF local network area, responsibilities include the set-up, operate, maintain, calibrate, network, and repair rain measurement instruments, and the deployment of NASA-designed Platforms for in situ Evaluation of Rainfall Systems (PIERS).
  • Maintenance and further development of existing network and communications hardware and protocols that allow remote operation and monitoring of Task-related radars or other instrumentation.
  • Assist in the selection of local field radar operations site(s) and installation of affiliated meteorological radars at selected sites.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with radar engineering and equipment setup
  • Experience in the operation of NPOL.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience supporting NASA or similar government remote sensing missions.
  • Experience with radar engineering and equipment setup
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status (due to government contract requirements).

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
