Essential Job Duties
Postdoc Scholar in Biophilic Design Research for Optimal Child Development

The Natural Learning Initiative ( NLI) is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE, 12-month, three-year, time-limited) postdoc scholar appointment. The primary purpose of this position is to support and advance the Natural Learning Initiative ( NLI) research agenda related to current multi-year, statewide naturalization projects that require multi-method evaluation research, and future projects with research components to be determined. NLI is dedicated to transferable knowledge generation using a range of methodologies, including randomized controlled trials, standardized system-level evaluation protocols, and tailored post-occupancy evaluations. NLI's multi-moth toolbox offers flexibility to match budget, time, and capacity limitations across contexts.

Through trend analysis, research, and innovation, NLI advanced nature-based, biophilic design solutions to ensure positive child development outcomes, including harmonious relationships with peers and adults. NLI's design thinking consider human behavior as an interactive, integral component of built environment biosystems - both conserved and regenerated by design.

A current NLI focus, among others, envisions children's facilities as indoor-outdoor and in-between doors active play and learning environments, where outdoor activity settings, including STEAM learning, are designed to produce measurable learning outcomes.

Knowledge generated by NLI and others is disseminated across varied channels, including scientific articles and print and media resources, transmitted via professional development offerings to NLI's community of interest. The bimonthly NLI Newsletter is transmitted to more than 10,000 individuals and organizations.

The position is based at NLI's lab at the College of Design, on NC State's North Campus in Raleigh, NC. The successful candidate will work closely with NLI PIs/co-PIs and leadership as co-mentors on selected projects that provide mutual benefits to both the appointed postdoc and NLI. Projects will involve collaboration with in-state and national partners as well as international collaborators.

Postdoc duties and responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of programs that integrate child development principles with environmental and outdoor learning goals in NLI's target contexts.
  • Conduct trend analysis to inform design research and innovation, advancing nature-based strategies that support STEM/STEAM learning, healthy eating, and physical activity in children's environments.
  • Ensure adherence to approved research and evaluation protocols and reporting standards.
  • Prepare and submit abstracts for presentation at regional, national, and international conferences.
  • Lead and support the development of manuscripts for the submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate on the dissemination of research findings through technical reports, digital platforms, and public presentations.
  • Identify funding opportunities and contribute to the preparation of grant proposals to support research and program sustainability.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local, state, and national stakeholders, including educators, policy makers, institutional leaders, and community collaborators.
  • Contribute to professional development initiatives, including instructional roles in online certificate programs, webinars, and courses, and co-development of new offerings.
  • Maintain timely and effective communication with Principal Investigators and project partners, including scheduling and documentation of meetings.
  • Oversee data collection, entry, management, and quality assurance to ensure research integrity across all project components.
  • Manage aspects of research compliance, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval processes and completion of CITI training.
