Position Summary:

The Medical Assistant (MA) provides vital support in both clinical and administrative areas of the clinic. Under the direction and supervision of a licensed Nurse or Provider, and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice, the MA participates in delivering patient care and ensures smooth clinic operations.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Clinical Support:


  • Assist licensed Nurses and Providers with patient care activities in accordance with clinic protocols.

  • Perform delegated patient care interventions, including vital signs collection, intake assessments, specimen collection, and administration of preventive health screenings.

  • Monitor patient flow, manage waiting room activity, and communicate wait times to patients.

  • Prepare patients for provider visits by conducting pre-visit chart reviews, ensuring equipment and supplies are ready, and escorting patients to exam rooms.

  • Assist with minor procedures such as suture removal, wound care, simple dressing changes, biopsy set-up, and specimen handling.

  • Provide support in advanced clinical activities, including assistance with GYN procedures (e.g., abortions, hysteroscopy, LEEP, colposcopy), some of which require sedation or anesthesia.

  • Identify emergency situations and promptly communicate with the licensed Nurse or Physician to initiate appropriate actions.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation using proper medical terminology and hospital-approved abbreviations.


Administrative Support:


  • Gather and verify patient information, schedule appointments, and assist with patient registration and check-in.

  • Verify insurance coverage and obtain necessary prior approvals for services.

  • Collect co-payments and assist patients with financial concerns, referring to appropriate resources when necessary.

  • Maintain patient records, update demographic and clinical data, and collaborate with Medical Records for accuracy.

  • Manage clinic communications, including mail distribution, patient reminders, and coordination of linked appointments (e.g., social services, interpreters).

  • Assist with inventory management, restocking supplies, and maintaining equipment logs.


Cross-Training in GYN Procedure Unit (PPU/GPU):


  • Participate in specialized training to support procedures performed in the GYN Procedure Unit, where patients may undergo sedation.

  • Assist providers with complex procedures such as abortions, hysteroscopy, LEEP, and colposcopy.

  • Prepare procedure rooms, set up necessary equipment, and support patient care during and after procedures.

  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and patient confidentiality at all times.


Work Environment and Expectations:

  • Maintain a professional appearance and wear hospital identification badge at all times.

  • Adapt to changing patient and clinic needs, including assisting other team members and floating to different assignments as necessary.

  • Participate in ongoing education and competency training to maintain technical skills and certification requirements.

  • Comply with hospital standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., DPH, TJC, OSHA).

  • Demonstrate respect, empathy, and cultural sensitivity in patient interactions, upholding patient rights and dignity.


JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:


  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Successful completion of a medical assistant program, second medical-surgical clinical rotation, or equivalent combination of education and healthcare experience.


EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of two years' experience in a clinical setting preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


  • Clinical competency testing must be passed.

  • Ability to effectively communicate in English (speaking, reading, and writing).

  • Proficiency in basic math and medical terminology.

  • Strong customer service and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and make decisions within department policies and procedures.

  • Basic computer skills, including data entry and interpretation of medical records.

  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of all patient information.
