Research Intern (Process Development) - Onsite - Marlborough, MA

Sartorius North America
United States, Massachusetts, Marlborough
Aug 05, 2025
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented PhD-level intern to join our corporate research Team with a focus on small molecule cargo loading into nanoparticle delivery systems (e.g., extracellular vesicles, lipid nanoparticles, or other nanocarriers). The intern will play a key role in the design, execution, and analysis of cargo loading experiments and support the development of analytical workflows for evaluating loading efficiency, release kinetics, and cargo stability.

Hands on position starting September 2025 for a minimum of six months up to a maximum of ten months

Onsite at our Marlborough, MA site,

In the Research Intern role, you will serve as a critical contributor in a collaborative project between Corporate Research and Process Development Services team. This project is focused on cargo loading optimization and efficiency evaluation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design and Execute Loading Strategies: Develop and optimize methods for encapsulating or loading small molecule cargos into nanoparticle carriers (e.g., EVs, LNPs), including passive and active loading techniques.

  • Analytical Method Development: Develop and apply analytical assays to quantify cargo loading efficiency, release kinetics, and encapsulated vs. free small molecules using techniques such as HPLC, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis, Flow Cytometry, and Raman Analysis.

  • Physicochemical Characterization: Support characterization of loaded nanoparticles for size, polydispersity, and zeta potential using DLS, NTA, and other particle characterization tools.

  • Stability and Release Studies: Conduct in vitro stability testing and release profiling under different physiological conditions.

  • Process Optimization: Collaborate with team members to integrate loading and analytics into scalable process workflows suitable for preclinical or early clinical development.

  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze experimental data, maintain accurate and detailed lab records, and contribute to technical reports, presentations, and internal documentation.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Engage with upstream, downstream, and analytical development teams to ensure seamless workflow integration and transfer of findings.

What will convince us

Education:

  • PhD candidate (or recent graduate) in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Nanotechnology, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Hands-on experience with small molecule formulation, drug delivery systems, or cargo loading into nanoparticles.

  • Proficiency in analytical techniques for small molecule quantification (e.g., HPLC, LC-MS, fluorescence, UV-Vis).

  • Familiarity with nanoparticle platforms such as extracellular vesicles, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), or polymeric carriers.

  • Strong data analysis skills and proficiency in scientific software (e.g., GraphPad Prism, ChemStation, or equivalent).

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills.

  • Experience working as part of multi-partner R&D projects

  • Identification with our core values: Sustainability, Openness, Enjoyment
